A bacteria that kills olives has been detected in Gard for the first time, the prefecture said on Thursday.

Xylella fastidiosa, which presents no danger to humans and animals, is on the other hand devastating for many plant species, including the stars of the aperitif.

It clogs the sap-conducting vessels, and prevents the plant from feeding, causing them to dry out or even die.

The bacterium, which can be carried by insects, was detected for the first time in France in 2015, in Southern Corsica and Provence-Alpes-Côte-d'Azur.

She was identified in September 2020 in Aude.

From now on, she has landed in the Gard.
