• As the Covid epidemic takes off, the Rennes University Hospital is forced to tighten the screw to limit the spread of the virus.

  • Visits are again limited to one person per day.

  • Due to the shortage of staff, the summer also promises to be tense at the CHU where 13% of the beds will be closed.

The seventh wave of Covid-19 is now well established in France where more than 200,000 daily cases were recorded at the start of the week.

All regions are affected by this outbreak, like Brittany, which has seen its incidence rate soar in recent weeks.

It now stands at 1,227 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in the region, up 458 points from the end of June.

In metropolitan Rennes, this rate is even higher.

While it was only 160 cases per 100,000 inhabitants on May 28, it is now 1,358 cases.

This outbreak of the epidemic is felt at the Rennes University Hospital, where 71 patients are hospitalized for Covid reasons, against 47 on June 20.

Among the patients admitted, 14 are in the intensive care unit.

In an attempt to limit the spread of the virus, the establishment is forced to tighten the screw.

Visits are again limited to one person per day.

Similarly, “adult or minor patients in consultation can only be accompanied by one person”, indicates the CHU, which recalls that “the vaccination pass remains compulsory in health establishments”.

13% of beds closed this summer

This epidemic rebound comes as hospitals are in crisis, in particular emergency services which are completely saturated throughout the territory.

At the Rennes University Hospital, we are thus preparing for a new tense summer.

Especially since the emergencies of the Saint-Grégoire clinic, faced like everyone else with a shortage of manpower, should still suspend their activity at night during the summer.

“Weekly territorial coordination meetings are already organized and will be throughout the summer to adjust, if necessary, the organizations of emergency reception services”, underlines the Rennes University Hospital in a press release.

In other services, the situation is no better.

To breathe the staff, exhausted by two years of pandemic, the hospital will thus have to close 13% of the beds in the coming weeks, against 7% last year.
