• Aire Libre The summer of glamping: some of the best luxury campsites in Spain

  • Spain Summer plans for enjoyment: festivals in the mountains, hotels for 'foodies' and a lot of Mediterranean

Nature overflows in these corners of inland and liquid Spain that can be explored placidly from a deck.

Sanabria Lake

Helios Cousteau

is the world 's

first wind-solar catamaran.

With departures from Custa Llago Beach in Ribadelago (Zamora), it navigates daily through the Sanabria Lake Natural Park, the

largest glacial lake

in the Iberian Peninsula.

From an environmental point of view, it is the most of the most, or rather, the least: it emits zero waste, zero polluting gases and zero noise emissions.

That is, the journey is completely silent.

The wind-solar boat on Lake Sanabria.

Another aspect that makes it unique is the underwater interpretation of the glacier, which includes an

immersion in the water by scientists-divers

where travelers can ask in real time about the fauna, flora, geology and ethnographic-archaeological remains of the lake.

This is possible thanks to a radio communication system and cameras that can be followed live

from the deck.

The boat is glass-enclosed and has a capacity for 80 passengers.

Riaño swamp

It is not easy to get to this corner of the southern part of the Cantabrian Mountains, but the reward is finding one of the most beautiful valleys in the province of Leon and in our geography.

Home of the brown bear and the capercaillie, this is also a valuable biodiversity zone that was declared a Regional Park of the Mountain of Riaño and Mampodre.

The spectacular Riaño reservoir.

The meeting point is the Riaño marina.

The ride on the

covered

catamaran covers the so-called

Leonese fjords

for an hour , a circus of mountains among which are

Yordas or Gilbo peaks

, both popular with hiking enthusiasts.

On board the covered boat, a screen helps the traveler to understand where he is: on the water, of course, but also on the remains of old Riaño and other towns that were submerged when these waters were dammed at the end of 1987, marking deep into this region.

The Sil River Canyon

One way to discover the extraordinary landscape of the Ribeira Sacra, on the border between the provinces of Lugo and Ourense, is to do it with one of the companies that offer catamaran excursions from various points of this landscape of vineyards and forests where nature rises in vertical grooves.

By catamaran, the route begins and ends at the

Santo Estevo pier

.

For almost two hours, the traveler navigates the steepest part

of the river

while a guide recounts the secrets and curiosities of the canyon.

By the way you can taste a DO Ribeira Sacra.

Arrives del Duero

Sailing in the Arribes.

Now it's time to discover one of the most wild and amazing places.

There where the Duero has pierced canyons up to 300 meters high as it passes through Zamora.

And we do it thanks to the Duero-Douro International Biological Station (EBI) and its operator Europarques aboard an ecological boat.

It's their thing as we are in the Meseta Ibérica Unesco Cross-Border Biosphere Reserve, home to griffon vultures, Egyptian vultures and Bonelli's eagles.

With departures from the border of Zamora with Miranda do Douro (Portugal), this is a highly recommended trip through international waters for the whole family.

The Castile Channel

The colossal work of engineering that would unite Castile in the 18th century is today a perfect plan for active tourism that can be explored by bike, on foot and, of course, aboard a small fleet of boats that each cover a section different from this hydraulic jewel: the

Antonio de Ulloa

ship in

Medina de Rioseco

(Valladolid), the

San Carlos de Abánades

in Melgar de Fernamental (Burgos), the

Marqués de la Ensenada

in Herrera de Pisuerga (Palencia) or the

Juan de Homar

in

Frómista

, the heart of the Camino de Santiago... they all run through this visionary network of canals marked out with up to 49 locks that were built to bridge the unevenness of the land of fields.
