Due to a major fire in the Finkenwerder district school early on Wednesday morning, school operations are canceled on the last day before the holidays.

The fire patterns indicate a gas explosion as the cause, as the Hamburg police and fire brigade announced on Wednesday morning.

The fire started in the basement of the district school and spread from there to the administration building, which also houses the staff rooms.

60 emergency services were on site during the night and were able to contain the fire to a few embers in the morning.

No one was in the school buildings during the night, and the caretaker was not injured.
