(Cáceres), the three candidates that Spain has presented to the second edition of the Best Tourism Villages program, an initiative of the World Tourism Organization that seeks locations that are good example of rural tourism and commitment to sustainability.

The applicant towns have been selected by a committee made up of the Secretary of State for Tourism, Turespaña, Segittur, the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces and the Association of the Most Beautiful Towns in Spain, based on the proposals made by the autonomous communities. .

Submitted candidatures will now be examined by the UNWTO Secretariat, which requires applicants to be villages with a

low demographic density

and a maximum population of 15,000 inhabitants, located in a landscape with a significant presence of

traditional activities such

as agriculture, forestry, livestock or fishing and who share the values ​​and lifestyle of the community.

Built on the canyon of the river Vero, the medieval town of

Alquézar,

nestled in the Somontano region of Huesca, perfectly meets all these criteria.

Sheltered by the Pyrenees, its winding and sloping streets culminate in the majestic Collegiate Church of Santa María la Mayor, an old fortress and today a national monument.

We are also facing an ornithological and active tourism paradise as it has numerous hiking and mountain biking routes within

the Sierra y Cañones de Guara Natural Park

Villages awarded the UNWTO Best Tourism Villages seal will receive

a diploma or plaque valid for three years, with the possibility of renewal.

They will thus obtain visibility and international recognition as

examples of rural destinations

that preserve and promote their landscapes, their biological and cultural diversity, as well as their local values ​​and activities, and that have a clear commitment to sustainability in all its aspects (environmental, economic and Social).

Being part of the network allows you to participate in a space for the

exchange of experiences and good practices

, while giving access to political recommendations and knowledge.

In the first edition of Best Tourism Villages, launched last year, Morella (Castellón) and Lekunberri (Navarra) were distinguished with the seal.
