After a 21-year-old woman was sentenced in El Salvador to 50 years in prison for an alleged abortion, women's rights activists have voiced harsh criticism.

"The Salvadoran state has once again vented its anger at women who have neither the rights nor the means to defend themselves," Morena Herrera, leader of the feminist civic group for the decriminalization of abortion, said on Monday (local time).

The organization accompanied the young woman during the process and speaks of a miscarriage.

The then 19-year-old lost the child unintentionally.

The woman was already convicted of murder on June 29.

However, the court decision has only now become known.

Abortion is strictly forbidden in El Salvador.

However, the current case is the first in which a court imposed the maximum sentence of 50 years.

Again and again, women in El Salvador receive high penalties for miscarriages.

They are often accused of having had an abortion.
