Due to pollution with the bacterium Escherichia coli, it has been forbidden to bathe in Le Crotoy (Somme) since 2018. Despite numerous measures, this ban has been maintained, leaving the municipality without recourse, reports La Voix du Nord.

Mayor Philippe Evrard (Agir Ensemble) indeed felt that the town had tried everything.

A 4.5 million euro wastewater treatment plant has been installed, and a multi-year work plan to separate rainwater from wastewater has been put in place.

A prefectural decree also obliged the shepherds to withdraw their sheep from the bay during high tides, so that the excrement does not pollute the beaches.

Insufficient effort

The Artois Picardie water agency noted an improvement, however insufficient to reverse the ban.

The track of pollution of the Somme upstream, by the Maye or the Dien, is thus considered.

Philippe Evrard wants a consultation on the scale of the territory in order to identify the problem and hopes that the neighboring municipalities will show solidarity.
