"La Rochelle, July. A woman was found with her throat slit in her home facing her bound ten-year-old son, whom a blindfold and headphones had saved from the intolerable spectacle. This is the second in the space of a few weeks and the cops have not the slightest lead. Commissioner Baccaro will then call on Victor Caranne, prison psychologist and favorite ear of the multi-recidivist criminals of the prison of the Ile de Ré. But the killer is an elusive shadow who will soon tip the city into psychosis."
