This is called “last mile” management.

In order to reduce the transport of goods by truck in the streets of the city center, the municipality of Lyon has decided to relaunch and intensify deliveries by boat.

The last relay to the shops on the peninsula will be provided by cargo bikes.

This new alternative delivery system, already in place in Strasbourg, was inaugurated on Tuesday between Rhône and Saône.

"Ultimately, more than 40,000 tonnes of goods will be transported each year in low-carbon mode," says Grégory Doucet, the mayor of Lyon.

"The rotation of a boat and 15 bicycles will replace 150 vans and reduce CO2 emissions by more than 92% compared to all-road diesel," adds Thomas Castan, president of the company ULS responsible for piloting the project.

A 50-minute boat trip on the Rhône

The solution, the result of a partnership between Voies navigables de France, the Compagnie Nationale du Rhône and ULS, provides for the goods to arrive via the Edouard-Herriot port.

Then, parcels, pallets or crates of all kinds will be transported on a 20-tonne barge which will go up the Rhône to the Morand bridge, near the town hall “in just under 50 minutes”.

They will then be collected by delivery people, responsible for carrying out the last kilometers by electric bike to serve the establishments or companies concerned.

At the start, a fleet of seven electrically assisted bicycles with seven trailers with a carrying capacity of 200 kg will be deployed.

"An increase is expected in connection with the growth of freight", specifies the city.
