Will train ticket prices increase due to soaring energy prices?

The SNCF, the leading industrial consumer of electricity in France, does not exclude this possibility from 2023. “For us, the energy bill will increase by one billion euros.

We may have to pass it on to the tickets, ”said Jean-Pierre Farandou, CEO of the SNCF, on Tuesday, June 28, on Public Senate, ensuring that no decision had been taken for the moment.

An additional cost of several hundred million euros

Last April, Christophe Fanichet, CEO of SNCF Voyageurs, had already raised the issue.

"We don't know how the prices will evolve.

(…) One thing is certain, next year, the additional cost for the SNCF can turn into a few hundred million euros, “said the manager, according to comments reported by BFMTV.

The SNCF buys its energy “two to three years in advance”.

This is why the company can still wait before raising its prices.

But, in 2023, Jean-Pierre Farandou affirms that the railway company will be “less well covered by these advance purchases”.

The bill is therefore likely to explode and be passed on to the price of train tickets.
