Tunisian actor Hicham Rostom dies at 75

The family of Tunisian actor Hicham Rostom said that he died today, Tuesday, after a struggle with illness, at the age of 75.

"The late is considered one of the most prominent artists in the field of representation in Tunisia, with several local and international participations in an important number of dramatic and cinematic works," a statement from the Ministry of Cultural Affairs said.

A number of Tunisian artists also mourned him through social media, including actress Dora Zarrouk, who wrote on Facebook, "The Tunisian drama has lost a great artist and a capable actor who left an important imprint in cinema and theater."

She added, "I met him more than once in my first business, and I met him in Tunisia a few days ago by chance, and we shook hands as if fate wanted me to bid him farewell."

Rostom was born on May 26, 1947 in the city of La Marsa in the northern suburbs of the capital, Tunis. After completing his school education, he traveled to France, where he obtained a number of scientific certificates and presented some artwork before deciding to return to Tunisia.

Over the course of five decades, his artistic career was filled with diverse works, as he participated in about 32 films, 26 series and more than 70 plays.

Among his most notable films are (Papers of Gold) by Nouri Bouzid, (Majnoun Laila) by Tayeb El Wahichi, (Silence of the Palaces) by Moufida Al-Tlatli, (Zahret Halab) by Reda Al-Bahi and (Whisper of the Sands) by Nasser Khemir.

And on television, he participated in the series (The People is a Story), (Qamart Sidi Mahrous), (Faj Al-Raml), (Nujoum Al-Layl), (Maktoob), (Taj Al-Hadara) and (The Night of Doubt).

He participated in a number of foreign films, documentaries and novels, such as the movie (The English Patient) in 1996. In 2017, he founded a Sufi music festival called (Rouhaniyat) in the city of Nefta in Tozeur, in the south of Tunisia.
