Egypt.. Investigation with the artist Mohamed Ramadan

The Egyptian artist, Mohamed Ramadan, was investigated by the Tax Evasion Prosecution at the New Cairo Court in the Fifth Settlement, regarding communications filed against him from public taxes, yesterday, as reported by the Egyptian newspaper Al-Watan.

The Tax Evasion Misdemeanors Court postponed Ramadan’s trial, accusing him of evading the payment of 300,000 pounds in taxes, to the next July 18 session for the report.

Mohamed Ramadan has recently been accused of "tax evasion, foreign currency trading, and wasting public money, after he appeared in videos throwing foreign currencies into his private pool, as well as waving his large financial wealth in banks, and keeping many funds inside his home."

Lawyer in the cassation, Khaled Mohamed, said that the law stipulates that he shall be punished with a fine of not less than 1,000 pounds and not exceeding 5,000 pounds, in addition to compensation equivalent to the tax that was not paid for each taxpayer who violated this law with the intention of evading the payment of the tax due on him.

The cassation lawyer added that the evader will be punished by paying a fine ranging from 200 to 2000 pounds, if he does not submit the tax return or includes incorrect data, explaining that the court, in addition to the imprisonment provisions, fines the accused the same tax value that he evaded for public taxes.

And the Egyptian lawyer, Samir Sabry, had submitted a complaint against the artist, Mohamed Ramadan, in which he demanded that he and his brother be tried for violating the laws by carrying a large amount of dollars with him on a private plane.

Egyptian lawyer Samir Sabry said in a statement, as reported by Egyptian media, “I submitted the report because at a time when the whole world is witnessing difficult economic conditions, which have affected the Egyptian economy, and measures were taken to preserve the cash reserve with the Central Bank, Ramadan and his brother appear inside a private plane. In it, the artist's brother counts dollars, saying: "My brother's favorite hobby."

He added that this "necessitates referring the two to an urgent criminal trial."
