There is a lot of interest in Lim Yun-chan, who won the Van Cliburn Competition.

An 18-year-old pianist who studied only in Korea won a famous contest, setting a record for the youngest ever, so it is natural to say that it is big news, but no one expected that the wave would be this long and powerful.

We had a long talk with pianist Minsoo Son, who has been teaching Lim Yunchan since 2017, and professor at Korea National University of Arts in <Curtain Call>, a newsroom where you can pick and listen to SBS podcasts.

Indeed, he was the disciple of the master.

I could see why Lim Yun-chan called him 'the great teacher'.

I conveyed the heart of the teacher looking at the disciple who was upset even after winning the podcast part 1 [▶Listening], and today (27th), part 2 [▶Listening] was released.

Again, it is full of impressive stories.

This is the first time I heard that Marine Allsopp and Lim Yunchan said that the stage was 'the highlight of my music life'.

I asked him everything he had been curious about, such as saying that Yunchan Lim enjoys composing and performing contemporary music, whether he plans to study abroad or participate in another competition.

Among them, I wanted to tell you the story of my teacher, who asked Lim Yun-chan to take a break and keep an eye on his music so that he could continue his music at his own pace.

Here are a few excerpts from the podcast's main content.

Chan-yun Yoon, who digs and digs again and again, I respect

Q. It was a special performance that didn’t feel like a contest.

A. Chani Yoon said in an interview that he practiced until 4 am, but in fact, there are many days where I practiced all night longer than that.

When Chani Yoon sends me practice in Korea, I listen to it and then talk on the phone, but because of the time difference, there were many times that I did it until dawn.

However, during the first and second rounds, the message was sent at 6:07 in the morning in the United States, so I was worried and told him to go to sleep and stop.

The way he digs and digs again is the figure of Chan-yi Yoon that I have no choice but to respect.

But when I listen to a performance, I have to fulfill my greed or desire for achievement, I have to achieve it and become perfect, and it's not like this.

It’s a process of putting my heart into music, but there are too many songs to solve and not much time, so the only way I could get into music was to just keep walking together and try to keep pace. needed

(It must be difficult physically, right?) After practicing like that, if you start playing with a very tired and exhausted mind, it is common to be dazed and unable to concentrate.

Most of the musicians, including myself, are like that.

But Chani Yoon goes beyond that.

No matter how tired I am, I hold onto it with my unshakable passion for music and never let go of it.

Until the music fills my heart

It was the first time I performed Mozart's Concerto, which I had performed in this competition, on the Korean stage.

Although time was tight, Chani Yoon prepared a song perfectly and came to take a lesson, but there was something lacking musically, so he said a few bones.

You should be able to feel the pain and hurt in this song, but it doesn't seem like your heart has gone deep into the music yet.

The next day was the first rehearsal, and Chani Yoon came home from lessons and practiced all night without sleeping.

What makes it so great is that I can play the Mozart Concerto perfectly without a single note, but the next day is the rehearsal, and why did I have to stay up all night to practice?

Chani Yoon is working to put his heart into his music.

I'm practicing to put my heart into each song, and I'm amazed at how the heck, how can you truly approach music like this.

I think I did the same thing in the preparation process for this competition.

(*Performers try to show the best condition on stage, and when preparing for a competition, it is common to practice according to the time of the competition. I heard that they practiced until 4 am, and all the songs they have performed before. But I wondered why he did that, but Lim Yoon-chan needed time to put his heart into music. He said that he went to the contest hoping that the music would really deepen, not the award.)

Conductor Marine Alsopp "The highlight of my musical life"

Q. Conductor Marine Alsopp had a different expression when performing with Lim Yun-chan, and it was not just a contest accompaniment.

A. It is said that Marine Alsopp said that Rachmaninoff No. 3 played with Chani Yoon was the highlight of his musical life.

This is what I heard from one of the judges.

There was a moment when Marine Alsopp and Chani Yoon collaborated, and there was a moment that made me cry.

You're a very good conductor, and you probably wouldn't have talked to Chani Yoon a lot, but we just met between music and music.

We met in music.

I think the greatest power that music has is to bring people together.

However, with Rachmaninoff's music, Chan-yi Yoon has achieved complete harmony.

He felt it to everyone who heard it.

There were many people who shed tears, but this was the wonder of the music.

Rather than multiplying the emotion just because I know a lot of this music in advance, if the meaning conveyed to me when I hear a story I don't know for the first time is actually more important, it seems that classical music plays a more important role.

*I am feeling the 'power' of music once again as I see the 'confessions' pouring out that even people who were not interested in classical music shed tears while listening to his music.

Performance that approaches the essence of music with pure immersion and passion reveals the greatness of music even if you listen to it without 'prior knowledge' and creates a great resonance in your heart.

Watching the people I met in such great music perform with their souls burning itself came as a thrilling touch.

Q. The webcast host, pianist Elizabeth Joy Ro (a Korean-American pianist who is also famous as a member of the Anderson and Roe piano duo) also shed tears as soon as Chani Yun finished playing and praised it as 'the best performance of a lifetime'.

A. From there, I was all attracted to Chan Yoon.

He must have been deafened to hear that he had to be fair in the broadcast of the contest, but there was so much movement in his heart that he had no choice but to say that.

Q. He said he only did 30% of his practice?

A. Chani Yoon never exaggerates, so he must have thought so.

He doesn't even know how he's doing when he plays the things he's been pursuing in practice, and he's probably never even heard of how he hit it again.

He can only think so, since he only remembers being completely immersed in the music on stage.

Actually, as a performer, I always think so.

But this time, I think that Chani Yoon's performance was 300% better in some parts, not 30% when practicing.

I hope that Chan-yi Yoon will not forget the attitude that she is constantly trying to fill.

Q. The way you interact with the orchestra was different.

A. The most important thing in an ensemble is to listen.

You need to be able to listen to others so that the other person will be ready to listen to you as well.

However, Chani Yoon has been trained like that since she was young, and since many people liked her performance from a few years ago, luckily she had the opportunity to perform with several orchestras. It seems to have played a big role in being absorbed into the body very naturally.

Q. At times, you seemed to be conducting.

A. More than just a conductor, a pianist should know what instrument is singing and what happens next.

Chan-yi Yoon could conduct a case like Rachmaninoff No. 3 even with his eyes closed.

He knows better than anyone else in the world what details are moving.

That is why, as if conducting, he became one with the music even when he was not playing the piano.

Yunchan Lim also composes and enjoys playing modern music.

Q. I heard that you also compose music, have you ever listened to a song written by Chan Yoon?

A. I think so, but I keep trying not to hear it from me.

I say, 'Please tell the teacher one more time', but I can't hear it very well.

This time, when I come back, I will try to ask a question.

Because if I should know, I will be able to make my own judgment as to whether I can continue with this.

I heard that he did an encore with his own song after finishing a concert in the past, but it seems he knew for sure that I couldn't go on that day.

Q. You enjoy playing modern songs, and this time you also received the Best New Performance Award.

A. I learned from Russell Sherman, and I value playing modern songs, and Chan Yoon is continuing that roots.

When I went to the Yi Sang Yun International Music Competition a few years ago (the youngest winner at the age of 15 at the time), I played the song of Yi Sang Yoon really well.

There have been times when I was surprised to see that modern composer Thomas Ade solves very difficult songs.

If we who live in the modern age do not do modern music, who will do it? Even if the audience response is small, this is our legacy to leave and protect for future generations. It's not all, this is what I always tell my students.

Chani Yoon is well aware that he has to play such a role, and he will probably listen to such songs in Chani Yoon's recitals in the future.

*Yunchan Lim played Steven Huff's 'Fanfare Toccata', composed for this competition, in the first round, and received the Best New Performance Award.

The famous British pianist and composer Stephen Hough was also a jury member of the competition.

Rachmaninoff's 3rd Concerto, the second song in the finals, is the most talked about, but I would like to hear the performances from the previous rounds as well.

I'm leaving a link on the Van Cliburn Competition website because I've collected all the videos related to Yunchan Lim.

Q. In one performance last year, it was impressive that the work of a friend of her middle school age was put into the program and the encore was also a modern song.

A. At that time, I sang a song by composer Lee Ha-in-ri, and to tell the story behind it, I actually opposed it because I didn't know who I was at first.

But as soon as I saw the sheet music, I was amazed.

Chan-ah Yoon, I was really grateful to be able to talk about this with so much fun.

I think it is necessary to watch the composer's activities with interest as well.

*Ha-Ne-Ri is a 16-year-old composer who has already released two albums and is drawing attention in the music world.

At the House Concert New Year's Concert last year, Lim Yun-Chan included Lee Ha's piano props in the program and performed composer Ligeti's 'Three Bagatels' as an encore.

For me, it was the first time I saw Lim Yoon-chan's 'demonstration', and I confirmed that the 'praising' that people in the music industry had conveyed before was not an exaggeration at all.

Please watch carefully...

So that you can make your own music at your own tempo

Q. You said that recording an album by yourself is better than performing on stage.

So there were music lovers who were worried that the show would not be done.

A. The pianist Glenn Gould lived that way.

It is understandable that he wants to put down everything in the world and do only my music.

However, it would be great if you could share Yoon Chan-i's special music and important moments without losing it to people.

I once told Chani Yoon that a violinist named Henrik Schering always said 'I am an ambassador of music'.

As Chan-yi Yoon keeps the music sober, I hope that he will become a 'line of the music' that he can convey to other people as he is.

Q. What are your plans to study abroad?

Do you have any plans to compete again?

A. Studying abroad is a lot of trouble right now.

In fact, it would be nice if Chan-yi Yoon had the opportunity to learn from a certain teacher over several years and be able to do this.

It would be great if I could find a teacher who can really understand Chani Yoon and can inspire me, but I am not in a situation where I can talk about studying abroad prematurely.

It's a matter of making a really wise choice.

I can't do it if I say I'm going to die even if I die, but I wish I didn't.

Perhaps, given the atmosphere and situation of Chani Yoon right now, it seems that there is no need to go any further.

Q. An Olympic gold medal can be a 'goal', but winning a competition is a starting point rather than a goal for performers.

What is needed for Yunchan Lim's future?

A. For Chan Yoon, the best thing is to wait for a year or two.

Polini won the Chopin Competition at a young age and did not appear on stage for a long time.

Of course, he played a lot right after winning the competition, but he did not appear for a while and then reappeared.

Chan-yi Yoon lives his life at his own tempo, like flowing water, sometimes calmly, sometimes going out to the river or the sea when he wants to, and just staying in a small pond if he doesn't want to.

Looking at the current situation, I wonder if I will be able to create my own tempo like that.

What we need the most right now is to watch Yoon Chan-i’s music process in a relaxed, calm manner.

Now, if he understands that he can't contain everything at once and he can't see them all, I think Chani Yoon will be able to make music more comfortably.

Chani Yoon and I too, if we look away now, articles will pour in and we will lose our minds, but Chani Yoon says that he has little desire to succeed.

He goes back to his routine and he just wants to do his favorite music at the moment he likes it.

I hope that many people will take a break and watch it so that it can flow like a flowing water.

Only pure music and Chan Yoon remain...

Chani Yoon's 'Magic'

Q. What do you think is the reason for such a topic of discussion?

A. I think I fell for Chani Yoon's magic.

He overcame all the difficult moments by cutting countless times for a performance that had no particles in it, so to show that only the music and Yoon Chan remain, Chani Yoon enters the middle of the music and holds his heart and talks. To create a moment, you would have practiced dropping things outside of the music in your mind.

All that remains is that music and Chan-yi Yoon.

When I see that image, I feel proud as a person who makes the same music as I am to be able to move people's hearts like that and to have such a great power.

“Yeah, that’s what it’s like to be really inspired by music,” and I am also feeling really proud and inspired.

One of the few moments that I was really moved by at the concert was occupied by Chani Yun.

Q. What advice would you give to junior musicians?

A. First of all, I would like to tell you that I would like to hear from others, but not bend my own thoughts.

Especially as people who make art, even if no one believes in their thoughts, no one knows how beautiful and beautiful things can be when they firmly believe and grow.

It is also important to always be considerate of the people around you and to listen to the voices of those around you.

Chani Yoon never said that he would enter the competition first after learning from me.

There are times when you try to prepare for a contest because there is a contest to motivate you, but if you really only look at the music and go really thoroughly, as if every day is a performance, you can make much bigger music.

I hope you don’t get bogged down by the things in front of you right now, look a little further away, and give yourself time to let my music breathe and grow within you.
