The 47th Summit of the Leaders of the Seven Industrialized Countries continues its meetings today, Monday, June 27, 2022, at Elmau Palace in the Bavarian Alps, southern Germany.

The 3-day summit under the theme "Progress for a Just World" will discuss the energy and food crisis, high inflation and Russia's war on Ukraine.

Group of Seven Industrialized Countries

1973: The Group of Seven Industrialized Countries was established after a special meeting of finance ministers, and since that date has become a prominent official recipient of the largest economies in the world to discuss and coordinate solutions related to major global issues, especially in the fields of trade, security, economy and climate change.

1975: The first summit of this entity was held when 6 countries met to "exchange ideas and possible solutions" to the global economic crisis.

The following year, Canada joined this group.

G7 stands for “Group of Seven”, which are 7 countries that include Germany, France, Britain, Italy, Japan, Canada and the United States of America.

From 1998 to 2014, Russia was also a member, and during this period the group was called the G8, and due to the annexation of Crimea by Moscow, Russia was excluded from this grouping.

July 2006: The 32nd summit of the group was held in St. Petersburg, Russia.

China is the largest country in terms of population and the second largest economy in the world is not a member of the group, where the wealth of China is relatively less than the members of the Group of Seven, and according to the calculation of the per capita wealth of the country, China is not considered one of the advanced economies according to the scale of the countries of the group, Despite its membership in the Group of 20, it contains modern megacities such as Shanghai.

The G7 population represents only about 10% of the world's population, but they produce about 45% of the world's gross national income.

The G7 is not an international organization, it is an informal forum.

It cannot make legally binding decisions, but it does coordinate common positions and initiatives in various areas of public policy.

The results are announced in statements issued on behalf of the group as a whole.

Although the Group of Seven may not agree on binding decisions, their common positions in formulating them have great political weight, especially since the G7 summits always pave the way for multilateral initiatives and agreements.

Fighting AIDS and hunger

The group has achieved some important successes, most notably the establishment of an international fund to fight AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria, which it says has saved the lives of about 27 million people since 2002.

The G7 was the main driving force behind the activation of the climate agreement signed in Paris in 2016, even as the United States submitted a request to withdraw from the agreement at that time.

Through this assembly, member states are committed to important principles and values such as freedom, human rights, democracy and the rule of law, as well as prosperity and sustainable development.

At first, the heads of state and government of the seven member states wanted to talk only about monetary and fiscal issues in a small circle, but today almost all the topics of global importance are on the agenda.

In recent years, the focus has been on the global economy, foreign and security policy, development, migration and climate change.

The group has been criticized for its old-fashioned and limited membership, narrow global representation, and futility, and is the focus of anti-globalization groups, which often demonstrate during group conferences.

2015: During the Group Summit held in Elmau Palace in Bavaria, Germany, the G7 set the goal of lifting 500 million people from hunger by 2030.

2022: Argentina, India, Indonesia, Senegal and South Africa will participate in this year's summit as guests.

group meetings

The Heads of Government of the Member States, as well as representatives of the European Union, meet annually at the G7 Summit, and other high-level officials of the G7 and the European Union also meet throughout the year.

- The work of the Group of Seven industrialized countries is not based on a treaty, and it has no permanent headquarters or secretariat, and its presidency rotates annually among the member states, and thus the head country undertakes the task of determining the group’s priorities, hosting and organizing its summit.

The content of the meeting is determined by the host country.

At first, there are initial meetings of the group in small groups to coordinate and raise topics, and this is in coordination and cooperation at the level of ministers and senior government officials, and it coordinates positions constantly.

A summit meeting is also held every year.

The 2020 Group Summit, which was scheduled to take place at Camp David, USA in June 2020, was not held due to the Corona pandemic.

The European Commission has observer status, the main representatives of the European Union participate in the G7 summits and for a few years now, emerging and developing countries have also been invited as guests.
