At least one person died in a tornado in the Netherlands.

The storm in the coastal town of Zierikzee in the south-west of the Netherlands also injured around ten people on Monday, the rescue services said.

The emergency services are still in the process of checking the exact number of victims, according to the authorities in the province of Zeeland.

"The damage is considerable in some streets of Zierikzee," the rescue services said.

The hurricane not only uprooted trees, but also covered the roofs of several houses.

According to the information, the front of a house collapsed.

Dutch public broadcaster NOS reported that the tornado also knocked off a church roof and threw trampolines through the air.

The rescue workers called for people to stay away from the affected area so as not to hinder the police and fire brigade operations.

There is also a risk of falling roof tiles and branches.

On average, the Netherlands experiences several tornadoes per year.

According to the NOS, the most recent previous hurricane with deadly consequences was decades ago.

So it happened in 1992.
