The information on the Garrido-Corbière couple, published Wednesday on the

Point

site last week, was "invented", declared Etienne Gernelle, the director of the weekly, at the microphone of the

Culture Media

program on Europe 1 this Monday.

Comparing this journalistic failure to "an industrial accident", he explained that this case was based on "double smoking".

“People tried to set up a business that did not exist,” said the press boss, referring to “speakers still unknown”.

"And then there is the internal smoke, with a journalist who (…) lost his mind, did anything and smoked his hierarchy", continued Etienne Gernelle, insisting on the fact that the assertions of article "were false".

On Thursday,

Le Point

had to remove from its website an article posted the day before, which wrongly accused the couple of LFI deputies Raquel Garrido and Alexis Corbière of having exploited an undocumented employee.

Nine journalists from the "Point" are conducting a counter-investigation

Etienne Gernelle had apologized to the deputies, who had demanded the dismissal of the author of the article, Aziz Zemouri.

The latter was laid off and summoned to an interview prior to a possible dismissal.

According to his boss, the journalist "probably melted a lead out of indignation" thinking that this affair was true.

“Who fabricated these text messages, who invented this case, shaped this story?

We are investigating it (…) For the moment, we have no certainty, we have very serious leads.

Obviously we will publish all this as soon as it is ready, ”said Etienne Gernelle, according to whom nine journalists from Le

Point

, including himself, are working on this counter-investigation.
