Soviet film director Vladimir Motyl was born on June 26, 1927 in the small Belarusian town of Lepel. According to the master, since childhood he dreamed of shooting for the big screen, but due to circumstances he devoted ten years to theater directing: “I went along the parabola to the cinema.” Motyl's first notable film, Zhenya, Zhenechka and Katyusha, was well received by audiences but criticized by officials, putting his future in the industry in jeopardy. The painting “White Sun of the Desert”, filmed at the experimental studio of Grigory Chukhrai, helped him to rehabilitate himself. At the same time, Motyl twice refused to work on the film until he was given the freedom to rewrite the script for the tape, which eventually won popular love. “I am not one of those who believe that art should reflect life... Art should always be subjective,” said the director.
