More like a promotional video than a movie

"Ambulance"... a meaningless action that makes the viewer dizzy

picture

In the nineties, "Hollywood" knew two types of chaos cinema, the first type is organized chaos, and its pioneer is the Chinese director Jun Wu.

and Absurd Chaos, and was pioneered by the director of this film Ambulance Michael Bay.

Organized chaos means all action shots bear total destruction, but there is a well-thought-out planning akin to a parade that precedes the destruction.

Absurd chaos means that you don't understand anything of what's going on, and only watch things shatter before your eyes.

"Hollywood" called Bey the pioneer of the cinema of chaos and destruction in the nineties after his two famous films: "Bad Boys" and better than him, "The Rock," but then Bey lost his way.

If you're more into fast, show-stopping camera action than characters, then this movie is for you.

And if you're more into fast editing, weird shooting angles, and crooked shots than script, then this movie is for you.

If you are interested in short dialogues, high tension and meaningless action, then this movie is for you, but if you want to watch a real art movie, you will not find it in this mess.

In the end, you are watching a Michael Bay movie, which is not his best movie, but definitely better than the Transformers movie series.

spontaneous shots

"Ambulance" begins as a documentary, all shots are spontaneous, as if unplanned.

You feel chaotic from the first minute, and two thirds of the 135-minute movie are in an ambulance chasing the streets of Los Angeles.

It is strange that the city streets as we see them in the film are free of congestion, and this undermines the credibility of the film.

Sometimes the film comes close to the atmosphere of the wonderful action movie Speed in 1994, but the latter enjoys a political context that monitored the madness of explosive and booby-trapped terrorism that struck America in the nineties, and has an enjoyable story and captivating characters, and if you watched it today, you will find that it stands the test of time.

"Speed" is not just an explosive bus that explodes if its speed is less than 60 miles per hour, while "Ambulance" has nothing to do with it.

The film begins with the character of Will (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II), from the scene we understand that he is a good man, a decorated soldier, who has a son and his wife in need of an operation that the insurance company refuses to pay for, which amounts to 200 thousand dollars, and no one cares about her health.

The script exaggerates the situation so much that you feel the topic is ironic.

Will needs a loan, so he turns to his adopted brother, a thief named Danny (Jack Yelnhell) who is looking for someone to supplement his gang for a planned armed robbery.

It turns out Danny doesn't even have a plan, and when he gets into trouble, he hijacks an ambulance to get out of trouble.

There is a problem, the ambulance is carrying a patient who is a seriously injured policeman, because Will shot him during the robbery, and the paramedic (Isa Gonzalez) is trying to save him.

Yelnhille is weak in a villain that doesn't require much action, while Abdul-Mateen and Gonzalez do what they can in two poorly written roles.

Despite the extreme exaggeration of the events of the film, they do not express emotions through their faces.

entertainment

This film is a remake of a Danish film with the same title released in 2005, which Bey chose after he was on the verge of madness due to the restrictions of "Covid-19", which hindered the project he wanted to make, so he chose a low-budget work that does not exceed 40 million dollars, with a limited crew and shots. Action is also limited, which is this movie.

In other words, Bey made this movie as an entertainment until the conditions were created for the bigger movie he was working on.

Usually, when this happens, that is, when a director is entertained with a small film so that he can make the conditions for the larger film, the results are impressive and the small films achieve unparalleled success, but luck was not on the side and "Ambulance" failed in the American and international box office.

From the boring, sluggish start to the chaotic burglary scene, these 45 minutes are completely lacking in any kind of rhythm.

As if the movie is in a state of clinical death.

As soon as the chase begins, Bay resorts to his well-known technique: show shots so fast that the viewer's mind can't comprehend what's happening, quick montages that keep up with the speed of filming, the camera hovering over the actors' heads as they exchange quick and short lines of dialogue, or it flies low at the level of their chest and moves with them, wraps them, or You intervene between them, and with time the viewer becomes dizzy.

This movie is a waste of time and not worth watching, very bad, has no visual language or rhythm, suffers from a lack of fluidity in the shots, and is more like a trailer than a movie.

Exit transformed into a dinosaur

Director Michael Bay's problem is that he turned into a dinosaur in "Hollywood", as he has never changed his style since 1995, and this style is no longer in line with "Hollywood" today.

Of course, Bey has made very entertaining films (The Rock in 1996 is still the pinnacle of his cinematic career), but Bey, a former music director who needs to reinvent himself today, rediscover the connection to reality, and Ambulance is definitely not the right movie for that.

135

Minute, the duration of a movie that feels chaotic from its first minute.

If you are more interested in super fast camera action and show than characters, then this movie is for you.

From the boring stumbling start to the chaotic burglary scene, these 45 minutes are completely lacking in any kind of rhythm.
