Dr Chantière Somé-Meazieu is a discreet and humble woman.

At 43, she is a pediatrician in Côte d'Ivoire, at the University Hospital of Treichville, in Abidjan, a city where there are only about fifty incubators available in public hospitals for a population of more than 5 million inhabitants.

And in Côte d'Ivoire, the leading cause of neonatal mortality is prematurity.

I decided to lead this fight against neonatal mortality because I tell myself that these are preventable deaths.

We don't need much to save these children who only want to live.

Mothers need to be helped to keep their little babies alive.

I can say that I am an activist for the health of premature babies in Côte d'Ivoire.

To fight against prematurity, Dr Somé-Meazieu initiated the first kangaroo care unit in the country.

It is an animal-inspired technique, developed in the 1970s in Colombia, which consists of skin-to-skin contact with the infant, against the mother's chest, to create ideal conditions of temperature, affection and rest.
