It is therefore in Kigali that the fate of the International Football Federation (

Fifa

) will be decided for the period 2023-2027.

Rwanda will indeed host the 73rd Congress of the body on March 16, 2023. An elective Congress which will determine the identity of the president of Fifa for four years.

“

Kigali has already hosted a meeting of the FIFA Council in October 2018

”, recalls Fifa

in a

press release .

Its current boss, Gianni Infantino, knows the Rwandan capital well.

He went there several times.

It was there in particular that he

went to meet the African delegates

, on the sidelines of the African Nations Championship (Chan 2016), to convince them to elect him against the advice of the former president of Confederation of African Football (CAF), Issa Hayatou.

Since then, Infantino has maintained regular relations with Rwandan President Paul Kagame.

Fourth FIFA Congress in Africa

It is therefore anything but a surprise if Rwanda hosts this elective Congress,

four years after that of Paris

.

Kigali will in any case be the fourth African city after Marrakech (2005), Johannesburg (2010) and Port Louis (2013) to do so.

Addis Ababa was also due to

host the 70th Congress in May 2020

.

But this one had been virtual, because of the Covid-19.
