The Arts Center at New York University Abu Dhabi will host a musical performance by City Band, led by the international Syrian musician, Kinan Al-Azma, on the Red Stage, next Wednesday.

The clarinetist seeks with his band, which was established in New York City in 2006, to present a creative blend that combines jazz and western classical rhythms with authentic Syrian beats.

The show will provide a musical experience that reflects the diverse cultural backgrounds of the band members, as they will present a musical dialogue in which the Syrian clarinetist's voice will harmonize with the country notes created by guitarist Kyle Sana, in addition to the rhythms of drummer Bodek Janke and the music of Petros Clampanes on the counter bass.

The band was praised by critics and audiences after its performances in the United States, France, England, Germany, the Netherlands, Egypt, Lebanon and Turkey.

Bill Braggin, Executive Artistic Director of the Arts Center at New York University Abu Dhabi, said: “Kanan Al-Azma is one of the most distinguished musicians, with a creative vision that unifies different musical styles.

He participated in training and workshops at New York University Abu Dhabi as part of the Abu Dhabi Festival, and starred alongside cellist Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble in 2017, which prompted us to host him again to present his poetic works with his private band.

We look forward to presenting City Band’s unique show to music lovers in the UAE, and to conclude the 2021-2022 season in the best possible way.”

For his part, Kinan Al-Azma said: “The music we present is inspired by different artistic styles, and does not focus on a specific culture, so our show will witness the performance of musical works I composed in a style that ensures the members of the band express their own perspective.”

He added, “This creative synthesis paints the features of a new scene that combines Arabic and international music with the rhythms of jazz.

I am excited to return to the UAE capital after my successful participation with the Silk Road Ensemble and the artist Yo-Yo Ma as part of the Abu Dhabi Festival.”

 Kinan Azma:

“The music we offer is inspired by different artistic styles that do not focus on a specific culture.”

Bill Bragin:

"The Syrian musician Kinan Al-Azma is one of the most prominent musicians, as he is distinguished by a creative vision that unifies different musical styles."
