A framework agreement was signed in Perpignan (Pyrénées-Orientales) this Wednesday between the State, the Occitanie region and the department.

Its objective is to lead to the signing of an agreement which will give the possibility to 100% of the pupils of the department to learn Catalan within ten years, reports France Bleu Roussillon.

Teachers should be trained

This optional education, which will not replace that of English, should thus be offered to all students from kindergarten to university.

These are both introductory courses but also a bilingual section in Catalan which allows students to master both languages right out of primary school.

Currently, only 29% of pupils learn Catalan or follow a bilingual education in their schooling.

Many more young people are learning to speak Alsatian, Basque or even Corsican.

With the development of regional language teaching, which is favored by 80% of the population, nearly 1,400 new teachers will have to be trained in the coming years.
