Cancer survivors tell optimistic stories at the Gulf Forum

The Friends of Cancer Patients Association will launch on the 28th of this month the second Gulf Forum for Survivors 2022, which will be held virtually for one day, under the slogan “Together to Empower them”, in cooperation with the Gulf Union for Cancer Control, and with the participation of various associations concerned with the fight against cancer in the countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council.

Each country represents one survivor, to talk about their experiences in empowerment and the most prominent challenges they faced and how they overcame them at the societal and professional levels, in addition to presenting the successful experiences of the associations participating in the field of survivor empowerment.

The participants in the first dialogue session will address the topic of community empowerment for survivors, the role of the family and society in empowerment and its impact on their lives, the nature of challenges facing community empowerment of survivors, and the messages that cancer survivors would like to convey to the community after obtaining rehabilitation and empowerment.

The participants in the session varied between participants from the Gulf Cooperation Council countries and the Republic of Yemen.

As for the second dialogue session, which is entitled “Moral and Psychological Support, Role and Influence”, during which survivors from the Sultanate of Oman will review their experiences, address the concept of moral support and the difficulties they faced, the entities or individuals who provided them with moral support and its role in the recovery journey, and the extent to which the survivor benefits from it Support on the level of his social life, managed and presented by Alia Al Shamsi, the media personality.

As part of the pioneering experiences presented by the Second Gulf Cancer Survivors Forum, psychologist Dr. Naima Al-Ali (UAE) presented a working paper entitled: "Social Empowerment for Survivors".

Under the title "Successful Experiences", the forum presents two experiences from Saudi Arabia, the first is "Sanad Program for the Recovered" for the Sanad Association to support children with cancer, and the Al-Ahsa Cancer Control Charity Association (Tawasim) presents a group of recovering stories.

The forum concludes its second session with a lecture presented by the Chairman of the Sharjah Health Authority, Abdullah Ali Al-Muhyan, under the title “The Role of Governmental Institutions in Combating Cancer and Caring for Survivors.”

The Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Friends of Cancer Patients Association, Sawsan Jaafar, said: “For the second time, we have been able to gather cancer survivors from different countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council and Yemen, in a forum dedicated to those whose experiences have become inspirational to others and give rise to optimism, and urge cancer patients to cling to hope, as you know. Society stresses the importance and impact of its role in helping survivors to lead their normal lives, and enabling them to contribute to conveying the message of recovery to their social surroundings.
