Blackwater VI - Rain

by Michael McDowell, published on June 17, 2022 by Éditions Monsieur Toussaint Louverture.

His favorite quote:

All of his dreams as a young man – what he would get, have and be – were just means to an end.

And that end was happiness.

Things hadn't gone as planned, far from it, yet he was reasonably happy.

Why this book?

  • Because this novel brings the epic

    Blackwater

    saga to a close .

The story ends as it began, in a brilliantly executed game of mirrors.

Michael McDowell happily orchestrates the end of his plot, the death of the name Caskey which, through the game of unions, will soon no longer be worn by anyone, and even, perhaps, the end of Perdido as a whole...

  • Because this ultimate novel brilliantly plays the score of emotion,

and even manages to bring us a few tears.

The old guard is dying out, and the new generation seems unattached to what has long bound the clan.

A new era opens, but the reader will not attend it and it is therefore with a touch of sadness and a powerful nostalgia that he sees fifty years of life of the Caskeys coming to an end.

  • Because the mystery remains present until the end.

The horror picks up again in this volume.

If many questions remain, the reader is not really embarrassed: he is free to imagine the answers he would like to bring to the questions that remain to him...

  • Because each of the volumes in this series can be read quickly,

with pleasure: two short hours of reading are enough to overcome a volume.

And each one is a little gem of workmanship, looking great in your library.

It may be futile, but it matters!

The essentials in 2 minutes

The plot.

Characters.

This latest volume introduces a new generation, but dwells relatively little on its protagonists.

The great heroine of this conclusion is the one who opened the ball: Elinor, now the matriarch.

Places.

Perdido, a remote little town in Alabama, has unexpectedly become one of the centers of the oil economy in this corner of the country.

Prosperity closely linked to that of the Caskeys!

The time.

This final volume opens in 1958 and closes in 1970. The saga will have covered fifty years of life of the Caskeys, and beyond that, half a century of American history...

The author.

Michael McDowell signs a record saga with Blackwater.

Its publication in France is a real success!

This book was read with

nostalgia: after all, it is the last volume in a series of six!

We got emotionally invested in the Caskey story…
