Two people died when a small plane crashed in Central Franconia on Sunday.

The motorized plane with two occupants crashed on a field around 11:30 a.m. near an airfield in the municipality of Büchenbach (Roth district), a police spokesman said on Sunday.

The ultralight aircraft was probably approaching the airfield for landing.

The cause of the crash was initially unclear.

Experts from the Federal Office for Aircraft Accident Investigation (BFU) were still at the crash site on Sunday afternoon, but were initially unable to get to work.

It is unclear whether the propellant for the plane's emergency parachute was damaged, a police spokesman said.

Before the dead can be recovered and the wreckage examined, the explosive ordnance clearance service must check it.

The crash site was therefore only cordoned off at first.

The propellant was removed in the afternoon, said a police spokesman.

"Now you can really get on the plane." The two dead could have been recovered with that.

Nothing further was known about their identities on Sunday afternoon.

According to a BFU spokesman, the investigation into the exact cause of the accident will take some time.

"We are now collecting information in the next few days," said the spokesman.

Experience has shown that it will take around two and a half months for an interim report to be published.
