Jouissance

by Ali Zamir, published on May 12, 2022 by Éditions Le Tripode.

His favorite quote:

“… the librarian resolved to tidy up in order to avoid constantly blazing up to the whites of my eyes, and this is what allowed me to better understand what was going on, until then a lot of things escaped me because of the din of certain verbs rustling on their pages in the obstinate hope of catching readers, of becoming bestsellers, that day I saw the librarian go into exile on my side and get busy putting verbs at the very bottom of my column, the stripping of my comrades could start again…”

Why this book?

  • Because the story is told from the point of view of a book which witnesses,

which spys, which feels the life of the people around it.

Not only is he a witness but in addition, his readers realize the intimate secrets it contains and he suddenly becomes the driving force behind the action.

He becomes both victim and threat.

The great originality of this point of view leads to new, poetic and cruel situations.

  • Because the language of the author is of a rare freedom.

He allows himself old-fashioned dialogues and cheerfully mixes words of now with obsolete terms.

If Céline allowed herself to use different registers of language in the same sentence, Ali Zamir writes in one breath in different registers and in different eras, which gives a surprising story, very enjoyable in terms of reading, and at the end poetic .

  • Because if the first part is the work of Eros

(magnificent pages of pure sensuality), the second is that of Thanatos.

The action gets carried away (who would have thought that a simple book could cause so much tumult?), a real race against time begins and the reader is drawn towards a truly surprising end, worthy of the best thrillers.
