▲ "I killed a person"

Early in the morning of June 2014, Ulsan A small police box in Ulju-gun, Metropolitan City.

Dotegi Market is full of drunkards who drank last night.

In the midst of such a commotion, there was a man who opened a newspaper and enjoyed a cup of coffee.

It's this one.

Detective Park Dong-il, a 30-year homicide veteran.

He was originally supposed to be in the homicide squad, but his appointment order was twisted and he stayed at the police box for a while.

If he hadn't been at this police box at the time, he wouldn't have met this case.

That morning, Detective Park saw a man arguing with a police officer.

The man is 43-year-old Jung Soo-ho (pseudonym).

I'm an aspiring writer.

The man said, "I killed a person," and recklessly pushed to solve it.

He confesses to killing people, and the other cops aren't too surprised.

It turns out that the man is a famous person at the police box who visits the police box every now and then and says that he killed someone.

Detective Park took an interest in him and brought him outside to investigate the murder.

But this man said, "Do you know about the relationship between the Earth and the moon?"

He talked for a while, but when he mentions 'murder', he shuts his mouth.

Eventually, Detective Park also robbed and tried to stand up, but this man caught Detective Park.

And he says, "I killed a real man. I've told him many times and no one believes him."

At that moment, Detective Park saw it.

The life in this man's eyes.

My eyes are out of focus when I'm telling other stories, but when I'm talking about murder, madness flashes in my eyes.

He felt something different.

But when this man tried to inquire about the incident a little deeper, he closed his mouth again.

In the end, Detective Park gave his business card and left.

A few days later, I got a call from a man.

Detective Park met the man at a soup restaurant near the police box.

But he also doesn't talk about murder, he just eats soup.

When Detective Park gave up and tried to stand up, the man slowly raised his head.

The eyes I met with Detective Park at that time, those eyes at that time.

"I killed a certain grandfather. About two years ago, there was a hut under Mt. Mudo in Ulju..."

After saying that, he shuts his mouth again and eats only soup.

Detective Park returned to his seat and began his troubles.

Then I remembered the 'farm murder case' that occurred two years ago.

A farmhouse is a simple temporary house built near a paddy field for convenient farming.

It's a concept similar to a hut.

Detective Park asked the detective he worked with about the farmhouse murder case.

It's been two years and he has yet to get a reply that he hasn't caught the culprit.

▲ Who is the culprit in the hut murder case?

But isn't that one person killed?

On June 19, 2012, two years ago.

An old man was found dead in a farmhouse near Mt. Mudo.

His body was covered with a blanket, and his face was covered in blood.

As a result of the autopsy, the estimated time of death was between the night before and the morning of the next day.

The cause of death was excessive bleeding due to multiple injuries.

Someone hit his grandfather's head and face with a blunt several times.

There's no trace of a robber in the house.

Investigations into the surrounding people were conducted immediately, but no suspects emerged.

The farmhouse was at the foot of a remote mountain, so there was no CCTV and no witnesses.

No fingerprints were found, and no tools were found.

Blood and hair were found on the door railing, all of which were confirmed to belong to the victim.

Through this, it was presumed that the criminal attacked the grandfather in the yard, dragged him into the room, laid him down, covered him with a blanket, and then escaped.

Since we were attacked in the yard, there may be traces left in the yard, but it rained heavily that night and was washed away by rainwater.

So this hut murder case remains unsolved.

But two years later, a man claiming to be the culprit in this case came to me.

Detective Park suggested, "If you killed someone, let's go to the scene together."

The man readily accepted, and the two met again the next day.

The man looked different than usual.

He pulled off his suit and appeared as if it were any day.

Detective Park took the photo with the man's permission to leave evidence.

The video that Detective Park took that day was released on 'Kokkomu'.

The man guided Detective Park to the place where the hut was without obstruction.

The house has now been demolished, and the actual location of the murder is correct.

And the man described the moment of the crime succinctly.

Facing his grandfather at night, he decided to kill him and then killed him by hitting him with a baseball bat.

Then he put his body in the room, covered him with a blanket, and came out.

His story was exactly the same as a real event.

Seeing a man at the crime scene who even knew how to commit a crime, Detective Park convinced him that he was the culprit.

On the way back from visiting the hut, the man suggested that we go to the house he lived in two years ago.

He is a man who suddenly wants to go to the house he used to live in.

The reason was really shocking.

Even there, he says he beat his grandmother to death.

This case happened two months before the hut murder.

If this is true, what this man committed is a 'serial murder'.

▲ Detective Park, a man who confessed to an incident that had no record,

went to his grandmother's house with a man.

But there were no people, no houses, nothing.

Neighbors agreed that the murder case was a no-brainer.

Detective Park investigated every case received in the neighborhood.

But there have been no reports of assault, let alone murder.

This man said he was sure he killed his grandmother.

Some say he killed, but no one is dead.

It's weird.

Detective Park did not give up.

He mobilized all his acquaintances and informants to track down his grandmother.

By the time three months had passed, Detective Park finally found his grandmother.

She was hospitalized as a vegetative man after her grandmother collapsed from a head shock two years ago.

February 13, 2012, two months before the hut incident.

At the time, an employee of a water purifier company visited the house and found her grandmother lying on her kitchen side, bleeding from her head.

She hurriedly called 911 and her grandmother was taken to the hospital.

119 with her grandmother's family at the time presumed that her grandmother pulled something out of her kitchen closet, fell down and hit her head.

However, the doctor who performed the emergency operation said her grandmother had most likely been hit by something like a club, and she carefully advised her to report it to the police.

But her family couldn't.

The family thinks that treatment comes first, and when her grandmother wakes up, she tells her to listen and decide.

But she said that her grandmother became a vegetable man.

She didn't report her like that, so of course she didn't even have an incident record.

This man had this to say about the time:

"I went in with the aluminum baseball bat I had previously bought. Grandma was washing the dishes in the kitchen and she hit her head with a baseball bat from behind, and she was very healthy. I fell to the kitchen floor after hitting 9 or 10. When I saw the fall, I was suddenly frightened and ran away without looking back."

Detective Park was sure this man was the culprit, but he was still heartbroken.

He had to have physical evidence to indict him.

Detective Park started looking for a baseball bat that was used as a tool for the crime.

He said the man threw the bat into the river, so he scoured the bottom of the river with heavy equipment and divers, but nothing came up.

He confiscated all of the man's clothes and tested them for blood, but nothing came up there.

He did everything to find evidence, but nothing came out.

Around that time, whether by chance or necessity, Detective Park received a personnel appointment.

From the police box to the police detective team leader, he originally found a job.

The conditions for him to investigate have gotten better.

Detective Park began to investigate the surrounding area in earnest.

What kind of person this man was, he knew the identity of this man.

▲ Look for evidence of murder

The people around the man all agreed that he was not a murderer.

He grew up in an ordinary family without any problems, and he studied well.

He was a sincere and gentle man.

He also took care of his body thoroughly, jogging every morning, and since he was a person who completed a full marathon course.

The farmhouse where the incident occurred was also a jogging course that this man passed while jogging in the morning.

He said he wrote to become a writer after graduating from college.

The man's family also claimed that the man aspiring to be a novelist made a false confession to write a novel and to experience prison.

Detective Park decided to visit this man's house in person.

As he was about to ring the doorbell, the side window was slightly open and he peered in, and noticed a strange sign.

That was it.

"Let's do the New Year's Literary Art Judgment correctly."

The man applied for Shinmunchunye several times, but was rejected, and there were many complaints about it.

He said there was obviously a problem with the judging, and if it wasn't, he thought that there was no way his work would fail.

He used to go to newspapers, hold a one-man protest, and write protests on the Internet bulletin board.

So he was quite famous in the local literature.

Another surprise found in this man's house.

The man turns on the computer and shows it as his work, but a folder stands out on the computer desktop.

It's a folder named 'Diary'.

It's a diary.

When I asked if I could take a look, he said gladly.

So, I read the diary one by one, and the content is what the earth is like, what the moon is like, and so on.

But between those strange stories, there were some bizarre stories intertwined.

Enlarging an image

“It doesn’t matter because they are the ones who will die for me.”

“Sometimes, I get a lot of stress, so I thought about studying people while dissecting cats.”

"I went to collect the body, but the door was locked. The old man is gone even at the bottom of the mountain, and the door is locked."

A diary written from 2013 to 2014 contained articles that appeared to be related to a murder case.

Detective Park asked him to show me the diary in 2012 when the murder took place.

But there isn't

The day before he went to the police box to confess to murder, he said he erased everything.

From then on, the investigation took off.

He summoned the man to the police station and started intensive interrogation.

The man said about the weather at the time of the farmhouse murder, "It didn't rain when I went, and it rained after the murder."

Detective Park checked the weather on the day of the incident, and it exactly matched the man's statement.

It is reasonable to assume that this man was at the scene that day.

Detective Park requested an analysis from the Forensic Psychology Division of the National Forensic Service to find out if this statement was credible.

A psychological examiner, who spoke with the man for eight hours, said there were limits to making up stories, and he analyzed the man's story to be credible.

The man said this

"I feel like my emotions are purified with a literary term like 'catharsis.' I just hit it, and then I felt really good."

Enlarging an image

The man expressed in detail even his emotions at the time of the murder.

Detective Park requested an arrest warrant for the man.

However, it was rejected due to insufficient evidence.

Detective Park continued to search for more convincing evidence.

At the same time, he kept an eye on him, calling the man every day to say hello, to make sure the man didn't commit another crime.

Detective Park said, "Even when I'm doing this case, I have to prevent other cases."

▲ I finally got it, confession After 1 year and 6 months,

another coincidence-like fate came.

One day, Detective Park heard of an acquaintance's death and visited the funeral home.

However, his death was already over.

I was so busy that I misunderstood the date.

Detective Park's eyes as he was about to turn around saw an electronic board in the hallway of the funeral home.

Detective Park found a familiar name there.

It was the grandmother who had become a vegetative man and lay in her hospital bed.

Detective Park came across the news of the grandmother's death quite by accident.

Detective Park visited his family and earnestly requested an autopsy.

Shouldn't he release his grandmother's han, if there is no autopsy, there is no evidence to punish the criminal.

In the end, the bereaved family allowed an autopsy, and the autopsy took place two years after the accident.

The result was as expected.

Sequel to severe head injury and linear fracture scars.

A devastating blow was applied to his head, and it was found that he had fractured his head from the top of his head to the side of his head.

Fractures like this can never happen when you fall in the kitchen, and you'll have to fall from a high place or get hit several times with a stick.

And the murderer was presumed to be a baseball bat.

The objective evidence I've been looking for so long has finally been secured.

Detective Park requested an arrest warrant again.

on two counts of murder.

This time, the arrest was decided.

It's been 1 year and 6 months since the man's confession.

But the man who had come to his feet and confessed to his crimes suddenly refused to testify and said he did not know, so he closed his mouth not wanting to say.

Front and back don't match.

Doesn't this man's mental world look a little strange?

Enlarging an image

This man said he had some mental problems after being discharged from the military.

He mumbles to himself, sometimes brings up incomprehensible stories.

But social life isn't a big deal, so he said that everyone was like that and just moved on.

A trial was held, and a fierce battle between the prosecution and the defense took place.

The lawyer claimed, "The man made a false confession because of a mental illness", "I said something I heard somewhere", and "There is no evidence other than circumstantial evidence."

However, the court sentenced the man to 20 years in prison by accepting various circumstantial evidence, such as over 100GB of testimony video filmed by Detective Park, a statement report from the National Forensic Service, and the results of his grandmother's autopsy.

This was the same for the second trial and the Supreme Court.

The court cited consistency of the statement, the consistency of the statement with the situation, as the main reasons.

▲ Choice, not chance, determines fate

Enlarging an image

Then, why did the man confess to an incident that could have been a perfect crime?

The man's answer was this.

He said, "I thought he would be successful if he killed people, but instead of succeeding, things keep getting messed up."

So he's confessing that he wants his business to work out once the case is settled.

Upon examination, this man found that his mental illness was more serious than expected.

The psychoanalyst explained about this man, "It was a situation in which hallucinations and delusional symptoms were consolidated and the systems were in place. He was unable to distinguish between these parts whether delusions and hallucinations were real or virtual."

And what's strange is that this person's intelligence was very high.

Top 5%.

He said he had a mental illness, but he didn't do well.

After the trial, the man was imprisoned in a treatment camp.

And he's been in prison for seven years now and he's being treated.

The production team of 'Kokkomu' tried to contact the man in the treatment center.

Then he got a reply from him.

Enlarging an image

"I will tell you the truth.

My grandfather and grandmother's assault and death incidents were not in my mind. It was not my heart.

I am sorry to the bereaved family.

After graduating from college, I had a serious headache. I don't know how many years ago, but I had a severe headache and I lay on the asphalt. Even now, in 2022, my head still sounds occasionally. I'm on medication. It's not painful.

I'm doing well in the treatment center now. Thank you so much for your interest. thank you."

In fact, this man also had a headache and complained to people around him several times that he kept hearing noises.

But I missed the treatment time.

Considering this carefully, no one recommended treatment to him.

That's what mental illness is.

Even if you receive proper treatment in the early stages of the onset, there may be no problems in your daily life, but it often gets worse after resting.

When I first thought it was strange, if I had actively treated it.

It may not have happened until innocent people were killed.

Of course, no matter how great a man's suffering may be, it cannot be greater than the suffering of the victims and bereaved families who suffered unfair damage from him.

And if Detective Park ignored the man's words, their unfair situation would not have been resolved forever.

Detective Park says:

Enlarging an image

"It's the same thing as a detective passing a crime scene and not doing it. The case doesn't stop unless it's resolved. There is only one answer I've given this. "

Detective Park said it was a coincidence, but his choices ultimately shaped his fate.

What do you think of 'today' when you heard the story of 'that day'?
