Irthi Council for Contemporary Crafts, affiliated to Namaa for the Advancement of Women, celebrated Emirati crafts during its participation in Milan Design Week 2022, highlighting the local experience in creative design, through innovative collections.

The council, which is the only Arab entity that participated in the event during the period from the 7th to the 12th of this month in Milan, Italy;

New designs through the “Moy” and “Al Nad” collections, using sustainable materials that blend originality with digital technologies, in cooperation with designers from the UAE and Spain.

The “Al-Moui” group, which is in the Emirati dialect, was inspired by the word “mouj” in Arabic, and is used to describe the waves of the sea. Bright colors and attractive embroidered designs stand out, to create a series of household items using Spanish leather, featuring the telly braids used to decorate the sleeves and ends of traditional dresses in the Emirates in a contemporary way.

The curved shapes in the collection are shaped from the dunes of the desert, and combine natural leather with the weaving and tulle braids created by Irthi Majlis artisans.

As for the “Al Nad” group, it employs modern techniques for making, forming and decorating tools and home accessories bearing the authentic heritage, as it uses parametric design technology and digital manufacturing to make molds, while pottery was formed through inclined casting process techniques, and the group’s products are unique additions of non-traditional antiques to homes. contemporary.

The collection comes as a continuation of the council's cooperation with Emirati designer Fatima Al Zaabi in 2019, who developed traditional local crafts and culture through the introduction of various materials and advanced digital technologies in design.

Creative groups

Irthi’s participation in Milan Design Week sheds light on five innovative collections, namely “Al-Moui”, “Al-Nad” and “Al-Sajjadat” inspired by Emirati motifs and Pakistani carpet weaving, and “Al Thayah”, which offers an innovative collection of blended household items. With the details of the traditional craft, in addition to the “Zenobia” group, which includes a set of vases and benches inspired by the pots used by the Bedouin tribes in the past by merging the two crafts of talli and wood inlays, to form a literal dialogue between different countries that combine heritage crafts to create a new identity.
