Maybe you've ever wondered why Tim Burton didn't take on

Batman Forever

(1995) after directing

1989's

Batman

and its 1992 sequel,

Batman Returns

. came up against deep artistic disagreements with the studios, and in particular concerning… the nipples of the dark knight!

A detail that may seem absurd, but which had partly decided Tim Burton to hand over to Joel Schumacher while Michael Keaton had to abandon his costume in favor of Val Kilmer.

A costume to which was, you will have understood, added a pair of nipples.

From there to say that the fiasco of the film was in germ in this aesthetic choice, there is only one step that the director of

Edward Aux Mains d'Argent

cheerfully took during an interview granted to

Empire

.

The nipples of discord

“At the time I said (to the studios) 'Wait a minute.

You complain about me for being too weird, too dark, and then you put nipples on the costume?

Screw you".

Seriously.

So yeah, I think that's why I didn't end up doing the third movie in the end," Tim Burton recalled, after being amused by the fact that the studios had, paradoxically, taken the franchise to increasingly darker territories thereafter.

Either way, nipples won't have worked for Batman.

If already Joel Schumacher's first film was a relative failure, his second attempt with

Batman and Robin

(1997) is remembered as a real fiasco.

It must be said that the hero this time embodied by George Clooney still exhibited strange nipples on his costume!
