Beijing postpones the reopening of schools after a new wave of Corona infections

Most Beijing students will not return to their schools next week as scheduled due to a new wave of infections with the emerging coronavirus (Covid-19), the Chinese authorities announced Saturday.

Beijing municipal spokesman Xu Hejian said at a press conference that most primary and secondary school students will continue to study remotely from their homes.

The city of Shanghai imposed a general closure several months ago, while schools were closed in the capital, Beijing, and residents were forced to work from home.

The Beijing authorities eased many restrictions at the weekend, but the registration of dozens of Covid-19 infections prompted officials to tighten some restrictions.

A testing campaign was launched in Shanghai targeting more than 20 million people on Saturday, less than two weeks after the end of the strict general closure imposed on the city, coinciding with food shortages and individual protests by angry residents.

A set of restrictions were kept as the authorities feared an outbreak of Covid-19 again after the worst epidemic wave in China in two years was finally brought under control.

China recorded 138 cases of COVID-19 on Saturday, including 61 in Beijing and 16 in Shanghai, according to the National Health Commission.
