Building the facial bones of an Emirati patient by 3D printing in Dubai

A medical team in Dubai was able to achieve a world medical achievement by building the facial bones of a young Emirati patient with cancer, using 3D printing technology, and by surgical operations considered the first of its kind in the world.

The management of the "Jumeirah Emirates Hospital" in Dubai said that it received a 20-year-old Emirati young man, with rare and multiple tumors in the face called (corneal cysts) that caused the destruction of the facial bones completely, severe deformity, speech and breathing disabilities, and eating normally.

The medical team at the hospital led by Dr. Jihad Al-Sukhun, an oral and maxillofacial surgeon, diagnosed the condition through a series of medical examinations using CT scans, MRI scans and biopsies, followed by a series of surgeries to remove the tumor and rebuild the facial bones.

Dr. Jihad Al-Sukhun said: In line with Dubai's strategy to benefit from 3D printing technology in various aspects of life, for the first time, we used 3D printing technology to design and print titanium facial fillings to rebuild facial bones, and restore bones through several surgeries on the patient's face, who had recovered. well with good aesthetic results.

He added, "The success of this type of 3D printing technique opens the door for the introduction of (biological metallic face) techniques to save cases of bone deformities resulting from tumors."

He continued, "This is the first case in the world that these techniques are applied to save facial deformity and rebuild bone defects, using titanium fillings of this size, compared to other techniques."

The doctor continued: This new technique saved the patient from taking many bones and soft and hard tissues from the tiny blood vessels from the legs and abdomen to reconstruct the face, which would have harmed the patient’s life and severely affected his quality of life.

He said, "This case highlights the importance of having a specialized center to achieve a proper diagnosis and implement a coherent treatment plan to manage these rare conditions."
