Hu Shi, a famous modern Chinese scholar and writer, visited Jinan three times in December 1919, July and October 1922 to participate in related activities.

For these three trips to Jinan, "Hu Shi's Diary" (Zhonghua Book Company, 1985 edition) recorded a lot of the last two trips. Supplement later.

If there are newspapers and periodicals published, he will make a supplementary record in the diary on a certain day in the future, and paste the newspapers and periodicals behind the diary.

From this, it can be seen that Hu Shi's state of mind in doing things can be described as peaceful, leaving no dust behind, and he is the kind of careful person who takes care of everything.

Surprised by the prosperity of Guangzhi Institute

  and huge influence

The second time Hu Shi came to Jinan was on July 2, 1922, when Tao Xingzhi presided over the China Education Improvement Society held its first annual meeting in Jinan.

He attended the meeting with more than 300 people including Cai Yuanpei, Liang Qichao, Huang Yanpei, Tao Xingzhi, Jiang Menglin, Zhang Yuanji, Zhu Jingnong, Zhu Kezhen, Tao Menghe.

In addition to the meeting, Hu Shi participated in a lot of activities. On July 7, "I went to see this year's new history museum exhibition in the afternoon. It turned out to be a mess, there was no arrangement, no historical system, just a lot of Antiques are piled up in a mess in several rooms! In addition, there are exhibitions of goods and other school grades, which are even more nondescript. I heard that the museum reimbursed 5,000 yuan, and the grades are so high.” Hu Shi, the Guangzhi Institute of Qilu University Still quite satisfied, even a little surprised.

He wrote: "Go out to see the Guangzhi Academy run by the church. This is a large popular education museum, which displays animal and plant specimens, history, religion, hygiene, customs, crafts, transportation, ethnicity and its clothing, Architecture, games, germs, astronomy, etc. There is also a lecture hall in the courtyard, a recreation room - Zhongchen Gramophone, etc., and a reading room. This is Rev.JS Whiewright, a British Baptist pastor (author's note: Wynn Guang) The institute, formerly known as T and Tsinanfu Institute, has been in business for 15 years and has achieved this point, and now it has become a part of Qilu University. This institute has become an important educational institution in Shandong society. People who come to visit every day , men and women, squires with long coats, and poor people with short coats or half-arms. During this year's competition here, the number of visitors every day exceeded 7,000. Today, I didn't look at the number recorded on the entry plane at the door. From April 26th to today, there are 70,000 visitors, and 79,817 people have come to visit. Since the opening of the museum, there have been 4.5 million visitors!” records in the diary Such details are rare, if it weren't for the figures in Hu Shi's diary, I'm afraid today's people would not have imagined the prosperity of the Guangzhi Institute and its huge influence among the people.

It was built 17 years ago, and the number of visitors was 4.5 million, which was really rare under the conditions at that time.

After all, Hu Shi lived in Jinan for a week this time.

At 6:00 a.m. on July 9, Hu Shi returned to Beijing by train.

Shandong Bookstore and Houzaimen Bookstore

  scouring books

Less than three months later, in October of that year, the eighth joint meeting of the National Education Federation was held in Jinan. A total of 45 representatives from various provinces attended. Hu Shi, a professor of Peking University, joined the meeting as a representative of the Beijing Education Association.

On October 9th, he left the house at 9:30 in the morning, got on the train at 10:00, and left at 10:15. The train that Hu Shi took arrived at Jinan Station at 10:11 that night.

In terms of time, this train was nearly two hours faster than the last time he came to Jinan.

Staying at the Jinpu Railway Hotel not far from the station, Hu Shi was very satisfied with the Jinpu Railway Hotel and wrote in his diary: "This is set up by the Jinpu Road Bureau. It can be compared to it. Shanghai’s Dadong and East Asia are bustling, not so quiet and broad.” Last time, Hu Shi stayed at Shi Taiyan Hotel, and he moved to Taifeng Hotel for the last night to share with Jiang Menglin. Hu Shi was right. Evaluate the situation of the hotel and explain the general situation.

This time I stayed at the Jinpu Railway Hotel, and the evaluation was so high, indicating that the living conditions here were completely beyond the knowledgeable Hu Shi's expectations.

This hotel was originally the office building of Jinpu Railway Bureau. It was built on the former site of the "Ten Kings Palace" in Jinan. It was built in 1904 and completed in 1908. It was designed and built by a German architect. The overall architectural style is the Germanic youth school. , but still retains the German classical architectural style.

At that time, it was really tall in China, no wonder Hu Shi was so favored.

On the 12th, Hu Shi had time to go sightseeing with a few friends.

Hu Shi's diary wrote: "Tongshucheng (Yao Shucheng) went to Sijia Wharf, hired a boat to cruise Daming Lake, arrived at Lixia Pavilion, Beiji Pavilion, Zhang Gong Temple (Zhang Yao, the governor of Zhuang in "The Travels of the Old Can"), Huiquan Temple. The wind is too strong, and we don’t want to visit Tie Gong Temple, so we went back to Yayuan for dinner. We got a poem.” This poem is “A Tour of Daming Lake”, and the writing time should be between lunch on the 12th and the location is Yayuan. garden.

On October 22, the twenty-fifth issue of "Effort Weekly" published this poem by Mr. Hu Shi.

After the meal in Graceland, Hu Shi and several people went to Shandong Bookstore to buy some books, and Hu Shi also recorded the titles in his diary:

  Lv Wancun "Dongzhuang Poems" 1.00

  Taiqingchun "Tianyouge Poem" 0.60

  Zhang Shizhai's "Faith" 0.60

Gao Shiqi's "Summer in Jiangcun" 2.50

The above zero kinds of "Wind and Rain Tower" are not available in Beijing and Shanghai.

Wan Sitong's "Ming Yue House" 0.10

"Chronology of Zhu Zi" (Hubei Bureau Edition) 2.00 (with Wang Shan's collation)

  "Gui Gu Zhu Chronicle" 2.50

  Zhu Jirong's "Musou Bibliography" 2.00

  "Tongde's suicide note" 1.00

"Three Immortals of Yueren" 0.70 (Guangxu Wuzi Chen Jinke) Yubu

Shi Buhua's "The Story of Zeya Hall" 0.50

Ding Yan "Chu Citian Wen Jian" 0.60

Books at that time were cheap, and the 12 kinds of books cost a total of 14.10. With Hu Shi's income, it was a drizzle, and there were zero kinds of "Wind and Rain Tower" that were not available in Beijing and Shanghai, which was a big leak.

On the 17th, Hu Shi, who was addicted to Taoshu, went to Houzaimen Bookstore again, but this time he did not gain much. "I only bought Li Wentian's "Yuan Mi Shi Zhu" and Hong Jun's "Yuan Shi Translation Certificate Supplement", which were lithographed. The price is 60 yuan."

Chatting with friends

  Like "Qianfoshan is very good"

On the 12th, Hu Shi was very busy. After a busy day, Hu Shi suddenly found that his "beard was not neat, so he went out to cut his hair".

The following diary is long and rich in content. It can be said that it has written all kinds of news and scenes in Jinan that day. It has strong timeliness and a considerable market taste.

"Sitting in a chair, he couldn't open his eyes. The hairdresser cut one end while I slept. When shampooing, I taught him to water with cold water before he woke up. When he went out, he knew that the post office (the building was very fine) was on fire, and the fire was raging. It was so big that the road was not open to traffic. I turned back and went to the Cui store to buy things. Unexpectedly, the lights were turned off due to the fire. The fire started because of the electricity, and the Cui store was closed. ."

The post office mentioned by Hu Shi should be the Jinan Post Building, which is still alive. It is located in the core area of the commercial port, opposite the former German consulate across a road. The architectural style is European and Western classical style. Charlie and Kang Wensai, built by Tianjin Yangxing, started construction in March 1918, completed the following year, and officially opened for business in 1920. They were the first postal building independently built by the Jinan Post Office.

According to various historical records, this building has experienced wars and was placed under the use of Jinan Post Office in 1958.

With such a wealth of experience, I wonder if any of the relevant materials have recorded the fire mentioned in Hu Shi's diary, which should have high historical value.

At 9 a.m. on the 15th, Hu Shi came to the primary school affiliated to Shandong No. 1 Normal School, and went to visit Black Tiger Spring and Qianfo Mountain with Wang Zhuchen and Nie Xiangxi.

Hu Shi had a very good impression of Qianfo Mountain. He remembered: "Qianfo Mountain is very good. There are temples on the mountain, and there are statues of the Kaihuang Dynasty. When we climbed to the top of the mountain, we could see the whole city of Jinan, the Yellow River and a corner of Mount Tai. We sat on the top of the mountain. We talked a lot, and I was very happy. I went back to the temple and talked a lot. I went down the mountain at half an hour and went to Hefeng Building for dinner, and I talked a lot again." When I returned to my residence, it was already a quarter past four in the afternoon, and I was also reluctant to return.

Originally, Hu Shi had to stay in Jinan for a few more days, but because Peking University was in such a commotion these days, on the 18th, Hu Shi received two urgent telegrams from Peking University colleagues and the Academic Affairs Office, calling him and several Peking University colleagues. Hurry back to Beijing, and in the telegram of the Academic Affairs Office, there was a message saying "Because of the lecture fee, all the principals and below have resigned, please return to Beijing quickly".

Hu Shi remembered: "I wasn't planning to leave tomorrow, but now something went wrong, so I had to pack up and leave tomorrow."

During this trip to Jinan, Hu Shi stayed for ten days. From living, eating, buying books, getting a haircut, visiting scenic spots and historical sites, wandering in Jiyuan, and giving speeches at some schools, the schedule was full. From the words in his diary, we could see that he was on this trip. Very satisfied.

This may be Hu Shi's last visit to Jinan, and the written record of his visit to Jinan will not be seen in the future.

As far as we know, there are as many as seventeen volumes of Hu Shi's diary published in manuscripts alone, with a total of several million words.

Hu Shi traveled to Jinan for "a few words" in his diary, but presented a smart Jinan to us a hundred years later.
