The bad weather which hit the west of France in particular between May 20 and 23 will cost 323 million euros, France Assureurs estimates on Wednesday, when those of the Pentecost weekend should cost at least double, according to the insurer Covéa.

Nearly 93,000 claims on the counter

The estimate released by the professional federation of insurers reflects 93,000 claims, but does not include the damage caused by a second wave of stormy events which crossed France between June 3 and 5, during the Pentecost weekend. .

This last episode could for its part cost around 650 to 850 million euros, explains the French mutual insurer Covéa (MAAF, MMA, GMF), which expects 240,000 claims.

Figures that are valid "for the entire P&C market (Fire, Accidents and Miscellaneous Risks) hexagonal, all insurers combined", specifies the company.

Injuries including one death

This unusual meteorological phenomenon caused "15 injuries, including two serious ones and one person who died in Rouen", according to the report drawn up Sunday morning before the press by the Minister of the Interior Gérald Darmanin.

The federation of insurers, on the other hand, is refraining for the moment from any estimate, judging that it was still “too early to estimate the number and cost of claims between June 3 and 5”.

Insurers “are fully mobilized alongside their policyholders to speed up compensation procedures and respond as quickly as possible to their needs”, she also specifies in her press release.

350 firefighters mobilized

France Assureurs, however, gives details of the bad weather in May: the two main cost items being car damage, for 131 million euros, as well as damage to homes, for 127 million.

For example, around 340 homes in Indre were damaged on the night of May 22 to 23 by violent storms accompanied by hailstorms which also broke car windows, according to the prefecture.

A total of 350 firefighters had been mobilized in the department for some 500 interventions and 1,500 distress calls, according to the county council.
