Brittany is often mocked for its weather and the alleged great thirst of its inhabitants.

In 2022, it would seem that the soils of the region will suffer from dehydration.

Hit like a part of France by a major drought, the region has not seen much rain lately, especially in the South.

The island of Groix is a worrying example.

Located off Lorient, it has just been placed by the prefect of Morbihan in "drought crisis", ie the highest threshold.

At the dawn of summer, the small island and its 2,500 inhabitants are worried.

During the tourist season, around 7,000 people live in Groix.

What if the situation gets worse?

“We will have to bring in water from the continent but I will not tell you the cost with a barge of 1,000 m3 per day”, warns Mayor Dominique Yvon.

From memory, it's been "two or three times in twenty years" that the island finds itself in this situation.

“It hasn't rained for two months.

That's not common.

And it takes on proportions!

People have to be careful not to waste,” warns the mayor.

“Islands are particularly fragile”

According to Pauline Pennober, in charge of the water mission at the Water and Rivers Association of Brittany, the region and in particular its islands are “fragile in the face of droughts”.

“It rains a lot more in central Brittany than on the coast, especially on the islands, due to the play of the wind in particular.

And the geology of Brittany means that we are on schistose and granite soils, so we have few underground resources, ”she explains.

"The islands are particularly fragile, with few underground resources and few waterways, because they are very small territories with relatively high tourism," she added, describing the situation as "worrying".
