Magnums of champagne from Moët & Chandon's Imperial Ice range are contaminated with MDMA (ecstasy).

The Belgian Federal Agency for the Safety of the Food Chain (AFSCA) alerted consumers for the second time this Friday, in a press release.

The Belgian authority had published a first press release on this contamination on February 25.

In France, the Directorate General for Competition, Consumer Affairs and Fraud Prevention (DGCCRF) also alerted the population on March 7.

The DGCCRF had notably mentioned the case of a German who died after drinking this champagne at the restaurant.

Contamination of unknown origin

The investigation identified two batches of three-liter bottles that may contain MDMA.

They are numbered "LAJ7QAB6780004" and "LAK5SAA6490005".

This code is visible on the label, on the back of the bottles.

They were mainly sold online but also in a few points of sale, indicates the FASFC.

"In the current state of the investigation, it is not excluded that other bottles of the same brand also contain MDMA", warns the organization, specifying that "the origin of this contamination is not not yet known”.

Last February, cases had been identified in Germany, therefore, but also in the Netherlands.

“These bottles were purchased on a peer-to-peer purchasing platform some time before they were consumed.

In this context, the police therefore urge caution when consuming drinks whose origin is not clear, “said the LVMH group, owner of the champagne brand.

The Directorate General for Competition, Consumer Affairs and Fraud Prevention (DGCCRF) clarified in March that no cases had been identified in France.

“The liquid contained in the bottle is not effervescent, does not contain bubbles and has a reddish-brown tint and an aniseed odor,” the organization had described.
