In the photo, there is not much left of the animal… Monday, a dead dolphin was found on a beach in Saint-Hilaire-de-Riez (Vendée), completely dismembered.

According to the Sea Shepherd association, which publishes the images on social networks, the cetacean was deliberately cut up for human consumption.

“It is a rare practice but which still exists among some fishermen, when it is totally prohibited, the dolphin being a protected species, observes Lamya Essemlali, president of Sea Shepherd France.

We notice that all the back muscles have been removed, to be able to eat the flesh in the form of steaks.

On-board cameras

The association, which explains that it identifies several similar cases each year, calls for the introduction of mandatory on-board cameras on fishing vessels.

"Even if it's accidental fishing, the dolphin that got caught in the nets should have been released," continues Lamya Essemlali.

A system of cameras on European vessels, as it already exists in Australia, would make it possible to limit illegal fishing and to have a better knowledge of the most destructive methods.

This Tuesday, the NGO was considering filing a complaint, essential for the opening of an investigation.
