June 6 is National Eye Care Day.

Eyes are one of the most important organs of the human body. Improper use of the eyes can lead to eye diseases and endanger health.

Under the epidemic, children and adolescents have increased the use of electronic products and reduced outdoor activities, increasing the risk of myopia.

However, many parents still have misunderstandings about the prevention and control of myopia in children and adolescents.

Recently, a reporter from People's Daily Online interviewed Zhang Ni, deputy chief physician of the Department of Ophthalmology of the First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University, to chat with parents about common misunderstandings in the prevention and control of myopia and help you prevent "pits".

Myth 1: Myopia can be cured

There is no cure for myopia with existing medical treatments.

The occurrence and development of true myopia is accompanied by changes in the eyeball, which cannot be reversed after formation, just as children cannot become shorter after they grow taller.

Misunderstanding 2: It’s okay if the child is short-sighted, it’s fine to have short-sighted surgery when he grows up

Myopia surgery can cure the symptoms but not the root cause.

Myopia surgery corrects myopia by changing the focusing state of the human eye's own refractive system. The surgery can only remove the glasses and cannot reduce the risk of fundus lesions caused by high myopia.

Myth 3: Wearing glasses will make the degree of myopia deeper and deeper

Correct optometry is beneficial to the visual development of children and adolescents and delays the progression of myopia.

The deepening of myopia in children and adolescents is accompanied by the development of the eyeball and the growth of the axial length of the eye. It is affected by many factors such as genetics and the environment. Wearing glasses correctly will not deepen the degree of myopia.

Misunderstanding 4: Myopia glasses are worn for far-sightedness, but not near-sighted

In addition to the special circumstances explained by the doctor, it is recommended to wear myopia glasses to see far and near.

Myopic eyes do not wear glasses when they are near, which will cause abnormal eye accommodation and vergence, leading to the occurrence of strabismus and the progression of myopia.

Myth 5: Mydriatic optometry will damage the eyes

Dilated optometry under the guidance of a professional doctor will not harm the eyes.

The principle of dilated optometry is to relax the muscles that focus on near vision, so that the optometry results are more accurate and reliable.

Zhang Ni reminded that the prevention and control of myopia should use the eyes scientifically and reasonably, and ensure adequate sleep; do more outdoor activities, moderate sun exposure; and eat a balanced diet.
