She was the last surviving granddaughter of Sigmund Freud: Sophie Freud died in the US state of Massachusetts at the age of 97, as the New York Times reported, citing her daughter.

As a child, Freud still regularly saw her grandfather, who is considered the founder of psychoanalysis and one of the most important and influential scientists of the 20th century.

She later fled from the National Socialists to the USA, where she taught psychology and sociology at a university in Boston.

Born in 1924, the mother of three had little to do with her grandfather's ideas throughout her life.

"I'm very skeptical about much of psychoanalysis," she once told the Boston Globe.

"I think that's such a narcissistic treat that I can't believe in it."
