That is what remains of the dreamy girl that

Alicia Sanz

(Ceuta, 1988) was in her childhood: the dream.

Already become reality.

The dream of succeeding in the world of acting, of ending up working in Hollywood with directors like Robert Rodríguez or being one of the protagonists of the recently released

Now & Then

, the first Spanish series on Apple TV.

With 32 years.

"I never would have imagined coming here from a small town,

I didn't even know what Hollywood was, it wasn't in my plans

."

Until he was 25 years old and with a friend living in Los Angeles.

And there he left after his start in daily series like

Bandolera

,

Amar es para siempre

or

Gavilanes

.

This is how international projects began to arrive and after the pandemic the casting to be Sofía, the young alter ego of Maribel Verdú, in the

noir

produced by Bambú.

«There was an audition by Zoom with several girls who looked like her, we blended in and she already asked there to be me.

As soon as they gave it to me, she called me and invited me to her house because we wanted to create something that was both of us

».

How much of that Sofía is there in Alicia and vice versa? There is a lot because Sofía is a dreamer, she went to the United States to study her degree, she is very close to her friends... But there are also things that I would not do because she is a person who doesn't know how to manage life. You went to the United States barely speaking English. In fact, I don't know how it happened, I never thought about having a career in the United States, but I had a friend who lived here and suddenly I felt that it was easy this, follow the yellow brick road, instinct. Have you ever regretted it? No, because I tend to never look back, everything happens as it should.

I do things precisely so as not to regret it.

That's why I'm here now because and I don't want to regret not having given it my all.

And what is it like to be away from home and in that huge industry at the age of 25? Now I look back and I still don't know how I had the balls to come to Hollywood at the age of 25.

I did not understand how big it is and what it means to make a career.

Now with the years I look back and I don't know if I would have the courage to leave so much, bet and face so many things. At the beginning she made about 100 auditions and they only took her in three.

Don't you think about leaving it there? I remember calling my mother crying because I didn't know how to say three words in a row without getting stuck.

Here the auditions are very different, you go to a room and you have a chance, if you make a mistake you are out.

That was very frustrating at first, but I had so many auditions that I never had time to dwell on how badly I had done because I had to study for the next one.

Even more so for a newcomer who came from working in daily series, the most reviled genre on television.

"

When you come to Hollywood they don't care what you've done or what you've worked for in your country, we all start from scratch and you have to earn the job

."

She earned it and was even returning to her country in projects like

El Cid

, where she played Doña Urraca.

How much have you been compared to Penélope Cruz for that? Comparisons are hateful, but I am grateful that they see me as Penélope, it is a compliment because it takes a lot of courage to make your way like her in this industry. Is it still frowned upon in Spain going to Hollywood? I hope and feel that this is changing because we are increasingly abroad.

And since there are more and more of us, I feel that they don't point us out as much.

Although I think it is irremediable. Does the fact of leaving have to do with the lack of opportunities in Spain? When I came in his day it was very different, there were fewer opportunities and projects, but that has changed.

There is our series that has actors from all over the world together. Is being abroad detrimental to finding work here in Spain? I don't think so, I couldn't have been in

El Cid

if I hadn't come to the United States and hadn't had this life experience. Is being Latino in the United States still harmful? I have worked hard on the accent so as not to have to fall into that cliché that continues to exist even though we are getting out of there.

She is no longer the typical Latina who only plays the girl and I have not been typecast in those Latin characters. But she has worked on the accent so as not to seem Spanish. If you have a very strong accent, the first thing they will see is that.

I, who did not grow up speaking English, still dedicate many hours to it because it opens up a field of enormous possibilities. Was there never a plan B for being an actress?

No, there never was and that is my advice to those who want to act, don't have it.

If you put a plan B in life, he will take it because it will be easier.

How has that mix of Latin cultures been in the series with actors from so many countries? I was already playing a project mixing Latinos.

Cities like Los Angeles or Miami are broths of different nationalities, it is the real thing.

The strange thing is to make a neutral Latino because each one has their accent and that has to be shown, it greatly enriches the series.

More projects like this should be done.
