This Monday will be synonymous with Pentecost in France.

But what does this term mean?

From the Greek

pentêkostê , Pentecost means “fiftieth”, as

Indeed, this Christian holiday is celebrated seven weeks after Easter, which marks the resurrection of Jesus, and ten days after the Ascension which symbolizes his elevation to heaven.

What do we celebrate at Pentecost?

Pentecost Sunday marks the arrival of the Holy Spirit on Earth and the birth of the Catholic Church, the 12 apostles being summoned since that day to spread the good word.

This religious episode took place during the meeting of the apostles of Jesus within the Cenacle, specifies the site eglise.catholique.fr.

The very place where Christ's last meal had taken place in Jerusalem.

The events of Pentecost occur, according to the Bible, during the Jewish holiday of Shavuot celebrating the gift of the Torah to Moses.

This is therefore a tradition which, if it celebrates the birth of the Church, predates the advent of Christianity, specifies

How does a day worked on Whit Monday work?

Although it is indeed one of the 11 public holidays recognized by French law, Whit Monday is not necessarily a day off.

Having become a public holiday since Napoleon Bonaparte signed the Concordat with the Church in 1801, it was then the subject of particular attention.

In 2003, the Prime Minister at the time, Jean-Pierre Raffarin, proposed replacing it with a “Solidarity Day” intended to finance actions for the benefit of disabled or elderly people, particularly affected by the heat wave.

In other words, employees had to work without being paid.

Since 2014, the Labor Code has included this notion of “Solidarity Day”, scheduled for Whit Monday.

But since 2008, it is possible to choose any other day of the year or even to give an RTT.

However, many companies continue to make this day coincide with Whit Monday.

The latter then have the choice between eliminating a day off, offering this day to their employees or making them work.

This will be the case, Monday, June 6, for a third of French employees, in particular those who officiate in supermarkets and department stores.
