Tom Cruise broke his own box office record with

Top Gun: Maverick

.

Indeed, the sequel to the 1986 classic earned no less than $124 million in revenue during its first weekend of operation in the United States, and around $248 million worldwide.

However, the actor had never managed to pass the 100 million dollar mark in such a short time with one of his blockbusters.

A feat which Tom Cruise did not fail to congratulate on the networks.

“36 years after the first movie, #TopGun Maverick is finally here.

We made it for the big screen.

And we did it for you, the fans.

Hope you enjoy the ride,” he wrote on Twitter.

A winning bet

A whirlwind start which, of course, also delights Paramount, the film's distributor.

“These results are absolutely fantastic.

I'm happy for everyone.

I'm happy for the company, for Tom, for the filmmakers," Chris Aronson, president of national distribution for Paramount, said in a statement carried by Sky News.

Originally, the release of

Top Gun: Maverick

was scheduled for the summer of 2020, but Tom Cruise and the production had preferred to delay it in order to guarantee the film a theatrical release, refusing in passing proposals from streaming platforms.

And we can say that they did well since the blockbuster signs the fourth best start at the box office since the start of the pandemic.
