Never had it rained so little in May in Montélimar (Drôme) since a meteorological station appeared in the city in 1920. Cumulative rainfall reached 5.4 mm during the month, where the average is 83mm.
A 100-year-old record has thus fallen, reports France Bleu Drôme Ardèche.
The previous one dated back to May 1922, when 9.8 mm of rain had fallen.
A widespread drought
Montélimar is not the only city in the Drôme to deplore a severe lack of precipitation.
The communes of Étoile-sur-Rhône and Donzère have also reached hitherto unknown levels of drought.
In Valence (Drôme), where it rains on average nine days in May, only three days of rain have been recorded this year.
A record set in 1976 has fallen.
The entire department is affected by the phenomenon, with a rainfall deficit estimated at 70%.
Faced with this climatic situation, many areas of the Drôme are subject to an enhanced drought alert.
