Sub-stories do not serve the film

"The Lost City" .. The irrational plot dominates the romance

Some might mistake The Lost City as an adventure movie, but it's a true romantic comedy with adventure elements.

Regardless, it's an entertaining movie, but it's forgotten and not memorable.

The title is general, comprehensive, and fits the film's material. This is a piece of entertainment without artistic value, and depends entirely on the charisma and harmony of its two protagonists: Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum.

Viewers 40 and older may remember a striking similarity between "The Lost City" and Robert Zemeckis' famous 1984 film Romancing the Stone.

The movie, starring Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner, was about a love story between its two heroes in the form of an Indiana Jones-style jungle treasure hunt.

The details are different but the template is exactly the same.

Here, Bullock as Loretta Sieg, a widowed beloved storyteller who lost her passion for life after the death of her archaeologist husband.

When her story publisher Beth Hatten (Davin Joy Randolph) pressures her to promote her latest book, Loretta succumbs with the slightest bit of enthusiasm.

Loretta goes on a book tour against her will with Allan Caprisson (orphaned), a representative of Loretta's books whose pictures appear on the covers of her 20 books.

What Loretta doesn't understand is that although Alan is so attractive and adored by her female fans, he is attracted to her.

What was expected to be a boring tour turned into an unexpected adventure when Loretta was kidnapped by Abigail Fairfax (Daniel Radcliffe), a billionaire who discovered the lost city of D, but needed Loretta to translate for him a manuscript that might reveal hidden treasure.

Basically, Abigail appears eccentric, and with time the dark side of his personality emerges.

Meanwhile, Beth and Alan devise a plan to rescue Loretta.

Alan enlists the help of a former Special Forces soldier named Jack Trainer (Brad Pitt) to carry out the operation.

And do not think, dear reader, that a house appears to continue, for that is impossible in the star equation, because a heavy house cinematically and will inevitably steal the light from an orphan.

Beth is here to play a satirical short, which in itself is the film's marketing machine, used in its marketing campaign.

It doesn't take long for Loretta to be freed from Abigail and we see Alan crossing the bush in search of civilization, with a group of men chasing after them.

A set of obstacles arise in the rescue plan, including the water leeches that stick to an orphan's back, appearing on the whole screen or perhaps the back of an alternate actor, in a scene that only teenagers laugh.

And there's the rock-climbing scene of Loretta in sparkly '70s disco outfits.

without thinking

Most of the adventure scenes are thoughtlessly executed, and the more action-adventurous brother-directors Adam and Aaron Nee lose, the movie loses its appeal.

Whenever Radcliffe tries to be serious and intimidating, he appears normal compared to similar characters in other films.

Perhaps Radcliffe did not take the role seriously, as this is in the end a romantic comedy, and does not require the presence of a villain that steals the scenes from the two heroes.

If we look at the whole picture;

Radcliffe does not add anything compared to his film history, as he is the child who carried on his shoulders the "Harry Potter" series, one of the most expensive, famous and most successful movie series of this century.

A spin-off that had to be cut out in the editing room because it doesn't add value to the movie is about Beth who is haunted by her author trying to find her.

There is a set of scenes that are suitable for a fantasy movie more than an adventure, and do not serve the movie in anything.

The sub-details are the worst thing that makes this movie lengthy, it's supposed to be 90 minutes long, but it's 110 minutes.

for women only

This film may have been aimed primarily at one demographic group, women aged 35 and over, but it is often suitable for everyone regardless of their gender and age.

The film is “easy to digest” and light, and although its elements are “heavy in blood” that requires some patience, the harmony between the two heroes and the physical comedy and romance between them achieve the process of balancing that is required to pass the flaws.

Bullock is an expert in this type of romantic comedy or even slapstick, and she has appeared in it in the past three decades, meaning there is nothing new for her. Most notably, the film needed romance or "heart and emotions" more than a meaningless or logical plot.

Bullock, along with Tom Cruise, is one of the last movie stars steadfast in the era of the dominance of Internet broadcasting technology, a star who has proven ability to attract American and international audiences to cinema in the post-Covid era.

We do not forget that part of the film's marketing plan was to promote its ability to hijack the first place from "The Batman" at the American box office last March, and it is not surprising that comedy directed at everyone can steal the audience from gloomy films.
