Irthi Council for Contemporary Crafts, affiliated to Namaa for the Advancement of Women in Sharjah, provides a unique experience for the global design community, through which it highlights the originality and aesthetics of Emirati heritage crafts, during the activities of the next session of Milan Design Week, which will be organized during the period from the seventh To June 12, in Milan, Italy, it aims to honor traditional designs and crafts.

Irthi will showcase the global level of diversity, innovation and high-quality craftsmanship that distinguishes the designs of its artisans in two separate destinations, during the event that specializes in fashion and modern designs. Exhibits and works that combine Emirati and regional heritage crafts, contemporary designs and modern technologies, in addition to the council's intention to launch new collections during this year's edition of the event.

For her part, Reem bin Karam, Director of Nama Women Advancement, said: “We will present the fruits of the global partnerships held by the (Irthi) Council, which mobilized the skills of female craftswomen, and this will enhance our continuous efforts to protect the intangible cultural heritage in the region, in line with the vision and directives of His Highness’s wife. The Ruler of Sharjah, Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher bint Muhammad Al Qasimi, Chairwoman of Nama’ for the Advancement of Women, as the Council’s efforts to protect traditional crafts and handicraft products have resulted in enhancing the attractiveness of the region’s authentic handicraft heritage at the global level.

She added: “Milan Design Week is an ideal platform to showcase Irthi’s pioneering efforts to combine traditional crafts with contemporary design, using a variety of materials, processes and techniques to showcase and present the traditional crafts of the Middle East, Central Asia and Southeast Asia in a new light.” .

Irthi’s participation program in “Milan Design Week” includes a discussion session with “Atelier Loma”, the French fashion research and design house, at the Civic Archaeological Museum in Milan on the 8th of next June, in addition to an open day for networking and communication on the 10th of the same month. In the “Bulgari” showroom in Milan, with the aim of reviewing the joint cooperation efforts between the “Irthi” Council and the Italian jewelry brand “Bulgari”, to highlight the importance of preserving cultural heritage and traditional handicrafts, as participation in this event will consolidate the cultural exchange between Sharjah and the UAE On the one hand, and Milan and Italy on the other, through a unique experience that combines the designs of the Emirati Talli craft, and the heritage jewelry pieces designed by the “Bulgari” brand.

Authenticity with modern touches

• The collections that Irthi displays at Milan Design Week include a number of unique pieces, handcrafted using materials and techniques from Emirati and international crafts, including: Al Safafa (palm frond braiding), Al Talli (handwoven braids), in addition to a group of Handicrafts, including wood inlays, glass blowing, and carpet weaving to create household items with a modern touch.
