Beware of eating it in excess.. it increases the risk of stroke

Charity Stroke UK says high salt consumption is a major risk factor for high blood pressure, the leading cause of stroke.

As reported by Russia Today, the charity said, "A lot of the salt we eat is hidden in processed foods such as ready meals, potato chips, nuts, cakes, biscuits, and processed meat."

The institution recommended avoiding adding salt to food when cooking or at the table, as it can be replaced with fresh ginger, lemon juice, hot pepper or dried herbs and spices to add flavor to the food.

"Some people use low-sodium products to help them reduce salt, but be sure to check with your doctor or pharmacist before using them, as they are not suitable for people with kidney problems who use medications that affect potassium levels," she says.

Other risk factors for stroke include lifestyle habits such as smoking and drinking alcohol.

It is worth noting that the World Health Organization recommends that adults consume less than 5 g (just under a teaspoon) of salt per day.
