The first cases reported in Europe today are mild.

But monkeypox can lead to skin and respiratory complications, with the most severe forms seen in children and immunocompromised people.

According to the latest report from Public Health France, five cases of Monkeypox have been confirmed in France, including one in Occitanie.

“A first case of Monkeypox virus infection was confirmed in Occitania on May 24.

This man was medically taken care of and isolated as soon as his infection was suspected.

At this stage, his state of health does not inspire any concern, ”indicates the Regional Health Agency, which recommends the isolation of infected people for up to three weeks and the disappearance of the scabs.

Human-to-human transmission

Together with the teams of Public Health France, its services have launched an epidemiological investigation in conjunction with the doctor treating this man, with the aim of identifying all the people who have been in close contact with him.

These contact cases have a course of action to limit the spread of this virus.

This infectious disease is caused by an orthopoxvirus and is usually transmitted to humans in forest areas of Central and West Africa by wild rodents or primates.

However, human-to-human transmission is also possible via skin lesions, the mucous membranes of a sick person or droplets such as saliva or postillions.
