The fight against AIDS is still far from won.

Last year, in the Pays-de-la-Loire, a hundred new people tested positive for HIV.

And among them, a third had already been living with the disease for five, eight or even ten years without knowing it.

“This is what is called late diagnosis, with an already impaired immunity or the AIDS stage already reached, explains Doctor Eric Billaud, president of Corevih Pays-de-la-Loire.

In the case of early diagnosis, treatment can be prescribed to make the viral load undetectable, and thus not transmit the disease and have a normal life expectancy.

“Sexual health without taboos”

To bring down this figure, which is slightly higher than the national average, the authorities are mobilizing until mid-June.

For the first time, a campaign entitled "Sexual health without taboo", and piloted by the Regional Health Agency of Pays-de-la-Loire, should in particular encourage screening for STIs, HIV and hepatitis, “a generalized reflex to acquire, at the slightest doubt or at least once a year”.

Other topics will be discussed, such as contraception or sexual violence.

More than 120 actions around sexual health will be organized for 16-30 year olds.

The opportunity to recall that since the beginning of the year, it is possible to be tested free of charge, without an appointment and without a prescription in a laboratory, but that there is also the possibility of passing a TROD (in particular with the Aides association) or to obtain a self-test from a pharmacy.

Some 5,000 people are being monitored for HIV infection in the region.
