One more year, the

Ministry of Culture and Sports

has awarded its

National Fashion Design Award

.

And this 2022 has gone to the figure of

Ángel Schlesser

.

Why is it newsworthy?

Because it is once again an example of

how the fashion industry plays an important role

in the fabric of (almost) any country, both

economically

(there are millions of jobs and euros that are generated month after month thanks to this activity ) and at a

cultural

level , since fashion is a reflection of what happens in society.

Perhaps, one of the most faithful that exist.

Hence, in a certain sense, the jury that met this morning in Madrid wanted to recognize Schlesser's work.

As they have communicated, the committee wanted to praise the "

complete artistic and entrepreneurial career of a Spanish creator who consolidated a certain aesthetic to make it internationally recognizable, with pure and innovative lines

".

In addition, it has also been highlighted that "

his work describes an attention to professional and contemporary women that is an example for the young generations of designers

".

In other words, it marks Spain beyond its borders and a practical but evocative source of inspiration for those who, like the creator, want to develop their passion until it becomes their way of life:

attending to dreams without losing sight of practicality.

and the needs of the clients.

Complicated?

Yes, that's why it's rewarded.

Impossible?

Not much less.

Although the Ministry specifies that this award "rewards the meritorious work of the winner through a work that has been made public during 2021", it also makes exceptions in "duly motivated cases" in order to praise and recognize

"a complete professional career throughout of time"

.

And this would be the case of Ángel Schlesser.

Ángel Fernández Ovejero,

the man behind the designer, was born in Santander and began his career in the fashion industry in 1984 thanks to men's fashion, later making the leap to women's clothing, as he has told on several occasions , express request of friends and clients.

It was in

1996

when it opened its first store in Madrid and since then, the firm has been growing at a slow but consistent pace to make known both inside and outside our country a refined aesthetic that, although it cannot be categorized as purely minimalist, does speak of cleanliness of lines that has become especially present in dresses.

Some more vivid and intense colors are combined with a good handful of neutrals, which also tend to take over tailor-inspired pieces, which connect directly with

those sartorial origins of Schlesser

.

Among its collections you can also find trench coats, flowing blouses and slightly more experimental silhouettes (within the minimal and sensible) that have convinced many, many people.

So much so, that even when the founder of the brand separated himself from creative work years ago (in 2018 it was Daniel Rabaneda who took the reins; in 2020, Juan Carlos Mesa),

his legacy has continued alive and intact.
