After consulting Yuan Longping's close relatives, the Second Branch of Tianjin Procuratorate filed a civil public interest lawsuit with the Tianjin No. 2 Intermediate People's Court, requesting Zhang to publicly apologize on China's state-level news media and eliminate the influence.
During the trial, the collegial panel of the case conducted a fact-finding investigation on whether Zhang committed an act of infringing upon the honor and reputation of a hero and martyr, and whether he should bear the corresponding civil liability.
The collegial panel held that Zhang's blatantly false remarks on the online platform blasphemed the deeds and spirit of Academician Yuan Longping, smeared the image of Academician Yuan Longping, denigrated his reputation, exceeded the legal scope of freedom of speech, and had obvious subjective faults. The behavior not only violated the personal dignity of Academician Yuan Longping, but also hurt the feelings of the public and harmed the public interests of the society.
Zhang expressed his obedience to the verdict, read out a letter of apology in court, and sincerely apologized to the relatives of Academician Yuan Longping for his inappropriate remarks.
