Editor's note:

Every Chinese who works hard to live is the most beautiful struggler.

It is precisely because of hundreds of millions of strugglers that China is today.

For ten years, pay tribute to every struggle of you.

Let us work together to forge ahead in the new era, and work hard towards the future.

China News Service, Tianjin, May 19th (Sun Lingling correspondent Hao Jingqiu) Recently, the 2022 "Mu Zai Cup" actuarial mathematics competition came to an end.

After fierce competition, Geng Huan, a 2021 graduate student majoring in Mathematical Economics at the School of Mathematical Sciences of Nankai University, stood out from more than 1,000 contestants from more than 140 universities around the world and won the first place in this world's top actuarial competition. Nankai University has won the "zero breakthrough" in this competition for many years.

This competition not only examines the contestants' mastery of probability theory, interest theory and actuarial mathematics, but also examines the contestants' problem-solving skills and ability to withstand pressure.

After two hours of fierce competition, in the end, with the accumulation of long-term learning and flexible use in the competition, Geng Huan won the championship on behalf of Nankai University, and the players from Peking University and University of Melbourne won the runner-up and the third runner-up respectively.

In order to participate in this competition, Geng Huan trained himself on the speed and accuracy of answering questions in a targeted manner, and focused on over 900 questions in half a month. "But the fundamental reason for getting good grades lies in the four-year undergraduate degree. Study hard. It’s not just me, in fact, many students in our department basically go to the teaching building to study when they wake up in the morning, until eight or nine o’clock in the evening, and during the exam week, they will go to eleven or two in the evening.” Geng Huan told reporters , Normalized efforts helped her form good study habits.

This kind of persistence is inseparable from her interest in mathematics. Geng Huan resolutely chose Nankai University to major in mathematics and applied mathematics after the college entrance examination. She feels that the charm of mathematics lies in its ubiquity. The planning and design of distribution routes contain mathematical knowledge, and I think mathematics is a subject that covers all aspects of life." Geng Huan said.

The five years in Nankai University were the five years that Geng Huan roamed in the ocean of mathematics, and the five years that Geng Huan continued to gain and grow in his studies and life.

"The study of mathematics will help you change your thinking. In the past, thinking was a relatively fixed problem-solving thinking. Now, we pay special attention to improving our logical thinking ability to apply basic knowledge to solve practical problems. This requires us to read as much as possible, Think more. There are no shortcuts to these." Geng Huan said that mathematics is an interesting subject and a difficult subject, and she would often encourage herself to step out of her comfort zone and actively participate in some tests of practical application ability. In the mathematics competition, she is more active in applying the knowledge she has learned to practice, which will give her a down-to-earth "sense of gain".

This "sense of gain" is also Geng Huan's "good recipe" for coping with the pressure brought about by intense study.

"Stick to learning step by step. After a stage, you will have a great sense of achievement, especially when you use mathematics to solve a relatively practical problem and build a mathematical model for it, you will actually be very happy." Geng Huan said .

In Nankai University, Geng Huan has won the National Inspirational Scholarship for two consecutive years, the Tianjin Municipal People's Government Scholarship, the Shi Shuzhong Scholarship, the Nankai University Wukong Investment Scholarship, the third prize of the 11th National College Students Mathematics Competition (Tianjin Division), and the American College Students Mathematics Award. Modelling contest second prize and other awards.

In Nankai University, being accompanied by good teachers and friends has further strengthened Geng Huan's path.

"Student Geng Huan is diligent and conscientious and has excellent grades. She has passed the undergraduate and master training program and continues to study for a master's degree in the School of Mathematical Sciences. She has a quiet personality, treats people with kindness, loves thinking, focuses on work, and has a strong plan. She has many shining points. It is a role model for students to learn from." said Jia Sheng, a teacher at the School of Mathematical Sciences of Nankai University.

"Fate is fulfilled, people do what they want." This is Geng Huan's favorite saying, "I believe that what you expect in life will always appear in life with your own efforts and persistence. Study or live. There will always be some difficulties and setbacks, but always act with anticipation.”

In the future, Geng Huan will continue to work hard at Nankai University and move forward firmly on the road of mathematics.
